Why bus drivers wouldn't ride their own routes
May 22, 2023
Happy Monday! Let’s talk about Tuesday. That’s when the City Cast Las Vegas podcast confronts the topic that’s tearing America apart: pickleball. 🫣 Family-friendly pastime or noisy nuisance? You surely have an opinion; everyone seems to. Email me your thoughts now, then listen tomorrow. Thanks!

What's CITY Talking About?
Talking About School Choice
School choice has been one of Gov. Lombardo’s priorities since taking office. Should taxpayers help defray the cost of students who attend private schools? What about charters? The Nevada Current’s April Girnus Corbin breaks it down in today’s podcast. [City Cast Las Vegas 🎧]
Tesla Tunnels Will Solve This, Probably
After several news-making stabbings on local buses (one fatal), some RTC bus drivers say their routes are so unsafe they wouldn’t ride them. “I would Uber,” one insists. According to RTC officials, police responded to 2,000 incidents on buses last year. [KLAS]
Union: Jara Must Go
Saying Jesus Jara isn’t “moving the needle,” the 18,000-member Clark County Education Association is calling for the superintendent to resign. (Um, have they ever met him?) Jara’s rejoinder to this charge of failing students: He and the School Board will “not be deterred in our duty to taxpayers or our employees.” [Review-Journal]
- More school news: CCSD police say careless parents are partly to blame for guns on campuses. [Review-Journal]
Welcome, Forthcoming Ethiopian District!
County Commissioners have approved the creation of an Ethiopian Cultural District around Twain and Decatur. With its many Ethiopian restaurants and markets, this area has been a hub for the valley’s 40,000 Ethiopian residents. It will also be Clark County’s first designated cultural district. Where Is It?

First, Where Was It? ⤴️
The site of last week’s photo is Police Memorial Park. In the text I alluded to a somber occasion — there was a ceremony there last week on behalf of law-enforcement officers who’ve died in the line of duty.
Kudos to those below who got it right:

Now, for Next Week’s Challenge ⤵️

This jolly green giant overlooks a nighttime corner somewhere in the valley — except when he’s a different color, depending on the projected light. (During the day he’s a tangle of wires.) Tell me where using the link below:

Today on City Cast
Gov. Lombardo is prepared to veto the entire state budget if the Legislature doesn’t approve his ambitious plan to expand Nevada’s quasi-school voucher program. And Clark County is ground zero for the impact of school choice legislation — most of the state’s voucher recipients live here and most use the funds for religious private schools. Nevada Current reporter April Corbin Girnus joins co-host Dayvid Figler to suss it all out.
Lastly today, sad news for the valley’s sweet-toothed foodies:

See you tomorrow!
