City Cast Las Vegas
Is this legislator in the hot seat — again?
May 26, 2023
Let’s begin with a heads up: Since Monday is Memorial Day, there won’t be fresh editions of Hey Las Vegas or the City Cast Las Vegas podcast that day. Second heads up: If the long weekend tempts you to visit Valley of Fire, expect a crowd — but know a reservation system is surely coming.

What's CITY Talking About?
Neal In Hot Seat?
State Sen. Dina Neal is already facing a state investigation — is she also under local scrutiny? Sources tell the Review-Journal that North Las Vegas officials met with an unspecified law enforcement agency over a suggestion that Neal had used campaign funds to pay off a loan on her home. Neal denies it, chalking it up to a clerical error on campaign paperwork — or on a vendetta by North Las Vegas regarding the sinking Windsor Park neighborhood. [Review-Journal]
The Way We Live Now
A fine, sad meditation on the meaning of community in the Las Vegas suburbs — written by a writer who grew up in them, Nicholas Russell — with cameo appearances by high rent, unemployment, inequality, and water loss. [Defector]
- More Russell: Nicholas Russell knocks down some of the enduring myths of Tony Hsieh. [City Cast Las Vegas 🎧]
Hard Lessons
It seems the Clark County Education Association, the big teachers’ union, operated without a proper business license for nearly two years — which is now complicating negotiations with the school district over the next contract. Worth reading to savor the mounting pettiness on both sides. [Review-Journal]
Dying Assistance
A bill that would permit the terminally ill to receive medical assistance in dying is headed for the governor’s desk. Similar measures have been introduced in the last five sessions, but none have made it this far. [Nevada Current]
Your turn: How do you feel about this issue?

Today on City Cast

Commercial Center, Punk Rock, and Pokémon Streets
I guest on today’s Friday news roundup, so fans of awkward Dickensheetsian gabble-gabble should tune in to hear me yak with co-host Dayvid Figler and special guest Kim Foster about (a) the Commercial Center dustup, (b) whether Las Vegas is a punk rock town, and (c) streets with silly names.
Lastly today, as there’s no newsletter on Monday, I’ll reveal this week’s Where Is It answer on Tuesday. Until then, have a great weekend — but remember the holiday’s purpose.
