What's CITY Talking About?
Playing Ball?
On Monday, as the Golden Knights secured their berth in the Stanley Cup finals, the economic benefits of assisting baseball’s worst team were the subject of a marathon public meeting about the A’s future stadium. An economist hired as a proxy for the A’s presented claims of big upsides like jobs and increased tourism. Afterward, members of the public spoke briefly. Union folks generally supported it, while others said the $380 million in public financing could be better spent elsewhere. [Nevada Independent]
Big Church
The Catholic Church has upgraded Las Vegas from a diocese to an archdiocese, the first new one since Houston was added in 2004. Previously under the auspices of San Francisco, Las Vegas and its 650,000 Catholics, along with those of Reno and Salt Lake City, will now fall under archbishop George Leo Thomas right here at home. Standoff
The 2023 legislative session has less than a week before its constitutionally mandated closure, and the Dem-controlled Legislature is still locked in a standoff with GOP Gov. Joe Lombardo, who has threatened to veto the state budget if his priorities aren’t “addressed.” [Review-Journal]

😔 Your Thoughts on Physician-Assisted End of Life
According to a legislative graphic at this link, 69% of public comments on SB239 — which would allow doctors to supply life-ending medications to terminally ill patients — were against it. Opinions submitted by Hey Las Vegas readers ran somewhat more supportive. A sampling:
Cheryl Guild: “I was a hospice nurse for eight years. I had many patients who expressed that chemo/radiation treatments did nothing but add more misery. If there is no hope, and hardcore medications are not touching the pain, I am all for it. But if an individual is still thriving and has months, I am not for it.”
Marie Shively: “This is actually a humane act. I lost my husband to cancer, and it was very painful to watch the last few days when it was obvious that nothing could be done. His pain was horrific.”
Debora C.: “We treat our pets better than we do the ill at the end of life. Death with dignity — let me and my doctor choose when and how I end my life.”
Michael Red Earth: “I believe people should have control over their bodies, and the decisions they make with their doctors regarding their health are sacrosanct. However, the main reason I am opposed to any legislation like this is that healthcare remains elusive, inaccessible, and inequitable. It shouldn't be easier to ‘die with dignity’ than explore options with a doctor I trust.”
Carleen G.: “I believe that there is enough dying in Las Vegas without passing a bill for every terminally ill person to come here to die.”
