Lombardo vetoes $7 billion state budget bill

June 2, 2023

What's CITY Talking About?

Carson City Stalemate

After signing three of the five state budget bills into law — including a historically large school funding measure — Gov. Joe Lombardo last night vetoed the fourth. Known as “the Appropriations Act,” it authorizes some $7 billion in spending, but Lombardo was critical of some of its provisions. The veto, a rarity in Nevada history, leaves the Legislature with little time to craft a compromise. The fifth major bill, authorizing capital improvements, remains stuck in the state Senate. GOP: Let Us Do Caucus!

Nevada Republicans are suing the state because they’d rather caucus for their presidential candidates than conduct a primary, as is now mandated after a 2021 law change. (What’s the diff? Read this.) Among other concerns, the party appears to worry that Democrats will quickly reregister as Republicans in order to mess with the selection process. [Review-Journal]

No Drag at Nellis

A Pride Month drag show scheduled at Nellis Air Force Base has been halted. It seems the secretary of defense has determined that such displays of playful inclusivity aren’t appropriate in a military setting — though previous Nellis drag shows have gone off without issues. [KLAS]
