City Cast Las Vegas
Edgy fun on the edge of town
June 5, 2023
Thanks to the reality of newsletter lead time, I’m writing this on Friday — when the governor and Legislature are at odds over the budget — and you’re reading it today, Monday. Last day of the session. Who knows, Carson City might be ringing with “Kumbaya” by now — or have suffered a gladiatorial meltdown. Either way, you gotta eat. Remember, Restaurant Week begins today. Help feed the city’s hungry.

What's CITY Talking About?
New Street Vendor Rules … Sometime
Street vendors are a contentious issue — which might get a little less contentious with a bill that landed on the governor’s desk last week. It authorizes local governments to update the clunky rules for obtaining a vendor’s license. But it establishes no timeline for doing so, leaving vendors in limbo. [Nevada Current]
- Context: The podcast has covered this issue both through the eyes of the vendors and from the perspective of regulators. [City Cast Las Vegas 🎧]
The Studio Next Door
As negotiations continue in Carson City over the big movie-making tax break bill — it would disperse up to $190 million a year to film companies — proponents have revealed the site of a second proposed film facility: Flamingo and Town Center Drive, in South Summerlin. “Well, it’s a lot better than a prison,” says one adjacent resident. Looking Back
If the baseball gods do flatten the Tropicana — one last plea: aim for Excalibur instead, baseball gods! — here’s a pretty good account of the glamorous, seedy history that will swirl away in the dust cloud. [Review-Journal]

Where Is It?

Where is this tableau of abstracted desert decor? If you know — or if you know where I can get some of those cactus lamps! — share your knowledge by using the button below. See you next week with the correct location!
