What didn't the Legislature finish in time?

June 6, 2023

“Sine die” is a Latin phrase that marks the constitutionally required end of Nevada’s legislative session. That moment arrived at midnight last night. But! It’s “Sine Die Another Day,” since lawmakers aren't done, and a special session will be called. (That’s a purely visual pun, btw, since it’s pronounced “sin-eh-dia.”) At least the Golden Knights finished strong, beating Florida for a 2-0 series lead. America approves.

What's CITY Talking About?

More Legislatin’!

Gov. Joe Lombardo will call a special session today so lawmakers can deal with significant pieces of legislation that are still unaddressed. Chief among them: a $1.4 billion capital-projects budget, the last of the state’s five major budget bills. Also stalled: a measure authorizing public funding for the Oakland A’s stadium, as well as the massive package of film-industry tax breaks. [Nevada Independent, Review-Journal]

  • Veto Update: Lombardo on Monday vetoed two high-profile bills passed by the Legislature — one that would’ve allowed life-ending drugs for terminal patients, and another that would’ve capped prescription medication prices. [Nevada Independent Veto Tracker]

Opacity Is the New Transparency

The school district still hasn’t released public information related to the February incident in which a school cop was caught on video flinging a student to the ground. Indeed, the district is refusing to release information on any of the five officers who’ve been investigated on use-of-force grounds in the last three years. [Review-Journal]

Drug Prices Coming Down? No.

Nevada Current healthcare reporter Camalot Todd joins the podcast to talk about how recently vetoed legislation just might have lowered your prescription-drug costs. [City Cast Las Vegas 🎧]

Your Meds May Soon Be Cheap — Oof, Vetoed!

Under a proposal scrapped last night by Gov. Joe Lombardo, the discounted rates that Medicare negotiates for some of the highest-need, most expensive drugs would’ve been available for all Nevadans. What could such a measure mean for Las Vegas, where pharmacy deserts abound? Today, co-host Vogue Robinson is joined by Nevada Current reporter Camalot Todd, who breaks it all down.

Lastly today, if our recent podcast episode about big fish of the Colorado (🎧) inspires you to dangle your own hook in the water, you’re in luck: Saturday is free fishing day in Nevada. 🎣 See you tomorrow!
