How to see the Oct. 1 memorial ideas
June 7, 2023
I grew up on Kola Street in Henderson, one of a batch of tree-named streets. Not far from me now is a clutch of roads with bookish allusions — Voltaire Avenue, Jane Eyre Place, Wigan Pier Drive. Because Pokémon streets recently made the news, the Review-Journal now chips in with seven other funky-streeted neighborhoods. I’ll bet there are plenty more.

What's CITY Talking About?
Zero to $40 Million
Now that the F1 paving project is well underway, we finally know how much public money they're gonna ask for: $40 million. We could publicly fund 10.5% of a baseball stadium with that kind of scratch! [Review-Journal]
Grim Memorial
Curious as to where the effort to create a memorial to the Harvest Festival tragedy now stands? Now you can see the concepts by the five finalists on display in the Clark County Government Center, as well as on the finalists’ websites. Also at the link: how to stream the June 14 meeting in which each team will present its proposal. [Clark County]
Foster the Teen People
With almost 700 teens in the foster care system, and another 100 staying in emergency shelters, the county says it’s reached its highest-ever number of teenagers needing placement. So it’s appealing to local residents to consider being foster parents. [KTNV]
In the Heat of the Knights
What would a Stanley Cup mean to Las Vegas? I mean, other than a raucous parade on whichever main road has the fewest orange cones? Local sports journalist Bryan Salmond joins co-host Dayvid Figler to puck around with the possibilities. [City Cast Las Vegas 🎧]

💵 Readers Write: On Tipping
Cilla B.: “I am of the firm belief that if you cannot afford to tip 15% at least, you cannot afford to eat out.”
Carolyn S.: “Is it worth more to pour a glass of expensive wine than a glass of orange juice? Shouldn't tipping be based on quality of service rather than cost of goods?”
Neil Gilfillan: “I think it would be far better for employees … to demand profit-sharing so that everyone has a stake. Why should a customer have to ‘help’ the business save money on wages by paying more for the product because it's served? I go to fast food places specifically because I don't tip.”
Robert C.: “Many high-end restaurants where you order a carry out have their credit card receipts programmed to choose a percentage to tip. Many of these have a minimum choice of 20%. In these cases I choose NO. However, I often feel obligated to leave the minimum of 15% when given that choice. For this reason I avoid many establishments when ordering out.”
🍩 Donut Memories!
Our recent newsletter item and podcast episode about donuts (🎧) prompted this recollection:
James P. Reza: “As a kid, I used to ride my bike to Carl's Donuts when it was on Alta Drive and Highland Avenue (now MLK). Their cinnamon rolls, apple fritters, and glazed rings were childhood obsessions. (Since that store closed) Poppy's Donuts has been my downtown-adjacent go-to for delish, high-quality, locally made, traditional donuts. But guess what? Carl's is coming back to my neighborhood, taking over the Donut Bar spot in DTLV. Tomorrow the diet, today the great (donut) buffet!”
