Eviction ban expires, tenants blindsided
June 12, 2023
It’s Monday — maybe today’s the day we’ll find out whether a weekend’s worth of back-channel horse-trading, deal-making, and compromise-mongering will result in a new baseball stadium. Or maybe not!

What's CITY Talking About?
Burning Questions
Last week’s fire at the Tides on Charleston apartment complex was the third major blaze there in as many years. (One person died in last week’s fire, and, at press time, another was missing.) Fire officials refuse to say what caused the first two and are still investigating the third. “Three fires in (three) years is unacceptable,” says City Councilman Brian Knudsen. [Review-Journal]
State to Celebrate Juneteenth
Juneteenth is now a state holiday, courtesy of a new law signed by Gov. Joe Lombardo. State, county, and city offices will be closed each June 19 in observance of the day when enslaved Black people in Texas learned of their freedom under the Emancipation Proclamation. (It’s already a federal holiday.) Bonus historical factoid: Nevada was the first state to ratify the 15th Amendment, granting African Americans the right to vote. [KVVU]

Evictions
Last Monday at midnight, a 2021 eviction-protection measure quietly expired while a bill to extend parts of it idled in the Legislature, approved but not on the governor’s desk. So, beginning the next morning, some tenants were blindsided when their eviction hearings proceeded. [Nevada Current]

Where Is It?

First, Where Was It? ⤴️
Unfortunately, no one who responded to last week’s challenge could tell me where to get my hands on some of those cool cactus lamps. However, high-fives and hosannahs to those few who knew where they were: at the Virgin Hotel Las Vegas.

Thanks for responding!
Now for This Week’s Challenge ⤵️

Where is this tableau of metal sculptures? And what are these folks up to? It’s clearly a historical reference, given the automobile. Are those figures miners? Road construction workers? You tell me using the button below.
