What's CITY Talking About?

💅 The Plaza’s New Digs

The Plaza in downtown Las Vegas has undergone a year-long and multimillion-dollar "Main Street Reimagination" project, preserving its 50-year history while introducing new features. The project includes a carousel-themed bar, a new location of Pinkbox Donuts, downtown Las Vegas' only smoke-free gaming space, and an outdoor rooftop patio for Oscar's Steakhouse. Plaza CEO Jonathan Jossel emphasized the need to adapt to the evolving landscape of downtown Las Vegas and cater to a new audience of visitors. [Las Vegas Sun]

⚒️ Exploiting an Outdated Mining Law

The General Mining Act of 1872 allows companies to extract minerals from public lands with minimal regulations. Nevada mining companies have been exploiting the antiquated legislation to extract valuable minerals without paying royalties or facing modern environmental restrictions, which has placed the state front-and-center in ongoing litigation to change the law. The Fight for Repatriation of Native Remains

Despite federal laws and regulations in place to support repatriation efforts, many tribes face bureaucratic hurdles and lack of cooperation from institutions holding their ancestors’ remains. Nevada tribes are part of a national trend to advocate for the return of their ancestors' remains, emphasizing the importance of cultural preservation and respect for Native American heritage. How to Dance in Vegas With Your Shirt On

A major part of Las Vegas’ industry relies on performers and creators. Jason Nious is a professional dancer and in his 16 years in the city, he has seen the way dance and performance have evolved. From Cirque du Soleil to Usher, he shares what it’s like to be a dancer in the entertainment capital of the world with co-host Vogue Robinson.

Vegas is all about that adult playground, so they like it sexy. I would say a good 80% of the jobs are going to be in that range, right? Not just your talent, but your body is on display. So I think dancers should know that when they come to this city looking for work.
Jason Nious, Director, Molodi Dance Company

That’s all for today. Let’s do it again tomorrow.
