Vegas ranks second best for these workers

June 16, 2023

Good morning! Will we see you at the Vegas Knights championship parade on Saturday? And remember that we are off on Monday to celebrate Juneteenth, so I’ll be back in your inbox Tuesday.

What's CITY Talking About?

The 8th Best Metro for Gig Economy

A recent study by research company CommercialSearch ranked Las Vegas in the top ten cities in the country for independent workers, and second only to Denver among western states. More than 70 metropolitan areas were judged based on criteria like the number of self-employed residents and the cost of coworking spaces. (CommercialSearch)

One Step Closer to A’s Baseball

After an eight-day special session, legislators approved a $380 million measure for the Oakland A's move to the Las Vegas Strip. The Southern Nevada Tourism Innovation Act, known as SB1, marked the second publicly funded pro sports venue approved by state lawmakers in less than a decade. With Governor Joe Lombardo's signature Thursday, the MLB will still need to approve the A's relocation. Construction would begin next year and be completed in time for the Las Vegas A's to play in the spring of 2028. (Nevada Current)

Experts Preparing Despite Delayed Wildfire Season

Nevada’s particularly wet winter has fire prevention experts feeling cautiously optimistic. The abundant rainfall has resulted in healthier vegetation and increased moisture content in the soil, making it less susceptible to ignition and giving fire management agencies more time to prepare and implement preventive measures. Officials are still encouraging residents to practice fire safety when parking a hot vehicle, using fireworks, and using campfires. (Las Vegas Review-Journal)
