🐍 Have you seen anyone carrying 30 snakes?

June 21, 2023

Hello! So Black Mountain, it turns out, is not actually Black Mountain — if by “Black Mountain” you mean that rock hump in southeastern Henderson that bristles with broadcast antennae. That is, the one we all call Black Mountain. According to this R-J story, the real BM is 10 miles away. It turns out the fake Black Mountain has no official name. So, tell me …

What's CITY Talking About?

🛸 UFO Was Just Space Rock

Leave it to the killjoys at NASA to debunk the Las Vegas alien crash landing story. That was a meteor caught on video, the agency says. Hmm, really? What are you hiding, Big Space?! (Review-Journal)

⚖️ Faux Pot Getting Scrutiny

The city might finally crack down on ersatz cannabis sellers — those storefronts, plentiful downtown, that advertise “cannabis” or “THC” products but aren’t licensed dispensaries and sell bogus, unregulated, and possibly dangerous goods. A new law addressing this is apparently in the works. [KVVU]

🐍 Wild Writhe

Some 30 snakes, including boas and pythons, were stolen from Wild Things, an Eastside exotic-pets store, the other day. Losses and damages total about $25,000. [KLAS]

💰 Hsieh It Again

With the new leadership of the Downtown Vegas Alliance planning to continue Tony Hsieh’s legacy, we assume that doesn’t mean the part of his legacy that involves kicking poor people out of residential motels and then letting the places sit empty for a decade. No, it’s probably more about, you know, creativity, getting people around a table, taking risks. [Review-Journal]

🤬 Bad Driving 101

Keep this list handy for all your road-rage needs: R-J columnist Steve Sebelius breaks down the six worst habits of local drivers. You’ve surely seen every infraction; you’ve probably committed some, too. [Review-Journal]

👽 Last Words From Readers About the Aliens

Michael Red Earth: “I would take (the aliens) to a Las Vegas dog park so they would know we have a demonstrable ability for interspecies communication because — currently — our intraspecies communication abilities suck.”

Michael V: “What I want to know is … if a UFO ‘crashed,’ as has been reported … where is the wreckage? Nobody is addressing that.”

⚗️ Triple Down Saloon to Open!

🏳️‍🌈 Rainbows on Rainbow

Every street sign on Rainbow between U.S. 95 and the 215 has reportedly been flagged. (Rainbow Mafia)

“It's not an easy time to be LGBTQA+,” emails a group calling itself the Rainbow Mafia, an anonymous cadre of valley LGBTQA+ artists and allies. Indeed, the situation has grown dire enough that The Human Rights Campaign recently declared a “state of emergency” for LGBTQA+ people in the U.S. The Rainbow Mafia is resisting with an awareness campaign to Pride-flag every street sign on Rainbow Boulevard that uses the word “rainbow.” “Our hope is that (it) brings a smile to people's faces and reminds our community that we're here, we're queer, and that pushing back with art and humor makes a difference!”
