Yes. 😐
But hopefully something ⬇️ will jazz up your day a bit and get you rolling into the week. Read on!

What's CITY Talking About?
🫠 Can You Spell ‘Accountability’?
School district superintendent Jesus Jara confirms that no action will be taken against the officer who was videotaped throwing a Durango High School student to the ground back in February. Nor will the district’s use-of-force policies change. Nor will Jara’s team stop stonewalling efforts to make the officer’s body-cam video public. According to the ACLU, the district’s investigation didn’t include an interview with the student in question. [Review-Journal]
🏘️ Windsor Park Assistance Coming
A new law, effective Saturday, allocates $37 million to help relocate residents of the sinking Windsor Park neighborhood in North Las Vegas. About $25 million is federal, while the rest comes from the city of North Las Vegas. Bill sponsor Sen. Dina Neal says the governor was on the verge of vetoing the measure — until, she says, she talked him out of it. [Nevada Current]

🚘 So Kafkaesque It’s Orwellian!
The clammy hand of government overreach is squeezing a new set of citizens: drivers who back into parking spaces. Specifically, those who try that rebel parking maneuver at the airport. Reid International officials warn motorists that they could be ticketed if their rear license plates aren’t visible in the parking garage. [KVVU]

🛰️ Looking Down at Nevada
So why is NASA opposing lithium mining in a remote Northern Nevada dry lakebed? Because the lakebed is so incredibly flat that for years the agency has used it to precisely calibrate satellite measurements. [AP via KNPR.org]
🔍 Playing the Lawn Game
A few weeks ago we linked you to that big ProPublica investigation into the alleged shortcomings of the Water Authority’s highly touted turf-removal program. One of the piece’s co-authors, Mark Olalde, visits the City Cast Las Vegas podcast to elaborate. [City Cast Las Vegas 🎧]

Where Is It?

Reader Chris Race sure has an eye for art, as this Where Is It? submission makes clear. If you look closely, you can see that the yellow tubing is meant to represent … firehoses? Is that a clue to this thing’s location? You tell me — when you use the button below to send in your correct answers, best guesses, or attempts at art criticism.

Why Removing Turf Won’t Save Us
A recent ProPublica investigation uncovered a massive flaw in calculations by the Southern Nevada Water Authority: Its turf-removal program, estimated to remove some 3,900 acres of nonfunctional grass, might eliminate as little as 1,000 acres — not nearly the water savings predicted. Co-host Dayvid Figler talks with ProPublica environment reporter Mark Olalde about the investigation, and what solutions lie ahead for Las Vegas if turf removal isn’t all that.
Lastly today, if you have room on your mental hard drive for one more story about Tonopah, the Clown Motel, the early 20th-century “Death Harvest,” and observations on “kitsch and carnage” in the American West, well, here you go. 🤔 See you tomorrow!
