Just what we need — a spaceport! 🚀
June 29, 2023
Well, no more Mr. Nice Skies. After our record-breaking streak of temperate weather, the sun is back in business: It looks like we’ll have an excessive heat warning beginning Saturday. 🫠

What's CITY Talking About?
🔌 Power Down
The temperatures may be going up, but your power bill will inch down. This week the state's Public Utilities Commission approved a move by NV Energy to lower consumer costs between 5-16% for July-September. [KVVU]
🚀 Space Dream
Something about the empty land between Vegas and Pahrump has prompted developer Rob Lauer to think: spaceport! Space tourism’s gonna happen, he says. So Lauer’s seeking investors for the private facility, which he envisions having a launch pad, space-plane runway, control tower, and 200-room resort. What, no sports arena?! [Review-Journal]
🤝 Venetian, Union Reach Agreement
If the late Sheldon Adelson is capable of angry poltergeist action, it might be prompted by this: The Venetian and Palazzo resorts have agreed to allow union organizing on those properties, a move that would be anathema to the staunchly anti-union former owner. [Nevada Independent]
😐 New Hendo Councilman Probed
Newly minted Henderson City Councilman Jim Seebock is already being investigated by the state ethics commission. It’s responding to a complaint that Seebock used his Metro uniform — he’s an outgoing assistant sheriff — in campaign materials during the recent special election. [Review Journal]

Today on City Cast
Rad Thai in Vegas
Las Vegas has some Thai food heavy hitters: Weera, Ocha, Archie’s, and of course, Lotus of Siam. How did we get here? Today, we’re bringing back a conversation that co-host Vogue Robinson had with UNLV professor Mark Padoongpatt, who wrote a book about the history of Thai food in America called “Flavors of Empire.” He talks about how the rising fame of places like Lotus of Siam is changing the way Americans value Thai food.
Lastly today, a heads up for book-lovers: The Writer’s Block’s South/West Book Club meets Thursday, July 6, to discuss “The Water Knife,” a terrifyingly bleak — and yet very entertaining — novel set in a drought-ruined near-future Southwest. Recommended! Read it this weekend! More meeting info here. See you tomorrow!
