Driverless cars coming to downtown

June 30, 2023

Welcome to Friday. The desert scorch is coming back, and tomorrow’s the first day of July, so I’m just gonna drop Angela M. Brommel’s poem “Mojave in July” right here. “Some people still fight it,” she writes of the heat. “They have not learned how to live within it.” If you’re still learning that yourself, here’s info on cooling stations and ways to chill out.

What's CITY Talking About?

🤖 Look, Ma, No Driver!

No more human “safety drivers” for Halo.Car’s self-driving vehicles — at least downtown. When you rent one of these autos within a certain distance from the company’s Arts District HQ, it will be delivered to you driver-free. The DMV signed off on it after reviewing the company’s technology and safety record. [Review-Journal]

⚖️ Teacher Attacker Sentenced

The 17-year-old convicted of brutally attacking an Eldorado High School teacher last year has been sentenced to a minimum of 16-40 years. The attack prompted heightened security measures at CCSD schools, including the implementation of “panic buttons” in classrooms. The attacker’s attorney blamed his actions on medications he was taking. [KLAS]

🎫 Fest4Life!

Want to grow old with your favorite bands while enclosed in a temporary hipster preserve in downtown Las Vegas? Register here to win free admission to the Life is Beautiful festival — for as long as you (and the festival) exist. Deadline: Aug. 13. [Life is Beautiful]

🤕 Cirque Injury

A male artist in Cirque du Soleil’s “O” show had to be carried offstage on a stretcher during a performance this week. He was injured during a newish act that involved plunging from a barge. The audience was told that he is OK. [Review-Journal]

Unions! Ethics! Theft!

What a week in the news! The Venetian and Palazzo, long holdouts against unions, agreed to allow organizing activities on their properties. New Henderson City Councilman is the subject of an ethics probe. And — paging Steven Soderbergh! — a conman somehow posed as an owner of Circa and made off with a cool mil. Jacob Solis of The Nevada Independent joins co-hosts Vogue Robinson and Dayvid Figler to make as much sense of these events as can be made.

That’s all for this week. I’ll be back Monday with a bucketful of things you can do on July 4. See you then!
