How to have fun this weekend

July 7, 2023

Happy Friday, Las Vegas! If you find yourself heat-sealed into your home this weekend, maybe check out this piece about Jimmy Hoffa, the Teamsters Union, and the making of modern Las Vegas.

But if you want to get out, we have our usual solid list of weekend events below. 👇

What's CITY Talking About?

🏍️ Wheelies on the Strip? The Nerve!

A reckless driver-slash-stunt motorcyclist was arrested for vehicular shenanigans on Las Vegas Boulevard — including, according to media reports, riding through casino floors and on stairways and escalators. (This and other reports conveniently omit which casinos.) “He did wheelies up and down Las Vegas Blvd,” Metro says. [KVVU]

🚨 What’s Good Hold Music for 911?

The wait times for local 911 calls are longer than the recommended standard — they average 57 seconds when 15 is the ideal. The average for 311 calls is also high: 11 minutes. Officials point to increased call volume and staffing shortfalls, but vow to improve. [KLAS]

🧨 Boom Town Recap

According to the local fireworks-reporting website, 12,463 complaints about illegal fireworks were submitted between June 28 and Tuesday (down from 14,000 last year). Just 61 people were cited. Hell, they could’ve nabbed that many in my neighborhood alone — and I don’t live in one of the three ZIP codes with the most complaints: 89123, 89108, and 89177. [KLAS]

📉 Rent Destabilization

Yes, it appears that, in May, local rental rates declined a bit, bringing the total decrease to 8.5% since their peak last August. (Vegas’ drop was most in the nation.) But they’re still up almost 19% from 2020. [Review-Journal]

Bright Light, Hot City
