Who is 🏹 skewering the east-side bunnies?

July 17, 2023

Hello, Las Vegas. Welcome to another week — think of today as a big piñata and Hey Las Vegas as your stick. Swing away!

What's CITY Talking About?

🎤😂 Our Laughing Stock Is Rising

Former LV resident Jimmy Kimmel and other laff-rioters talk about Las Vegas’ standup-comedy renaissance, and the city’s growing profile in the funny business. [Las Vegas Weekly]

🐾 Thank Goodness for Very Small Dogs!

I avoid most police-blotter news, but it’s not every day you encounter the phrase “doggy-door burglar.” To wit: There have apparently been a number of thefts in the southwest valley facilitated by that most mundane of suburban amenities, the doggy door. “It was a little terrifying,” said one victim. Cops have video of the likely suspect, and his distinct sneakers. [KVVU]

🏹 Bunny Killing

For more than a year now, someone has allegedly been using a crossbow to skewer rabbits in an eastside neighborhood, leaving residents fearful and outraged. A thousand dollars is being offered for info leading to an arrest, and the county’s animal protection folks are investigating. [KTNV]

➰ Tesla Tunnels Thrown for a Loop

Elon Musk’s earth-gouging machine surfaced last week at Wynn Resorts, meaning that sometime in 2024 there will be a station of the underground Vegas Loop there. But will these tunnels ever truly address the valley’s transit needs? Check out the high-octane opinions of City Nerd Ray Delahanty in this conversation with podcast co-host Dayvid Figler. Where Is It?

First, Where Was It? ⤴️

Last week’s challenge: At Oakey Boulevard and Ninth Street, this collection of funky stuff is an echo of that granddaddy of wild Vegas yards, the home of former lieutenant governor Lonnie Hammargren. Indeed, more than one respondent guessed that it was his place. Nope. Just a Beverly Green-area resident enjoying freedom of expression to its fullest. “I love that place,” says one reader. Adds another, “This RV is actually for sale!”

Congrats to the folks who got it right:

🏆 John A., Carolina Chacon, Kevin Raschko, Shalom S., Paul W., Zachariah Warner

And many thanks to my lovely wife for leaning out of the car window to snap this beauty.

Now for This Week’s Challenge ⤵️

I know what you’re thinking about this week’s photo: Is that the oversize backyard at Stately Dickensheets Manor? Of course not; if it was my place there’d be more cats. With that option crossed off your list, the real answer should be much easier to discern. Send me your correct responses or best guesses by hitting the button below. 👇

Drilling Into the Boring Company

Access to the Las Vegas Loop, colloquially known as the “Tesla Tunnels,” is limited to Convention Center attendees. But could an expanded Loop ever be a feasible way to reduce congestion on our busy streets? Today, we’re bringing you a conversation that co-host Dayvid Figler had in February with urban design expert Ray Delahanty (AKA City Nerd). Spoiler alert: The takes are hot, and the Loop doesn’t come out looking so great.

See you tomorrow!
