💵 What to consider when you tip
July 26, 2023
Hey, Las Vegas! So, I’m not a vegan, but I am sorry to see downtown restaurant VegeNation close — I was a big fan of its ersatz meatballs, among other dishes. Curiously, none of the stories I’ve seen go into detail about why it shut down, so I guess I’ll just blame the deep state and move on.
Some cool vegan (🎧) podcast content here, btw.

What's CITY Talking About?
🫠 Swelter In Place
If you’re a renter and your air-conditioning craps out, what’s your legal recourse? Turns out, your landlord has 48 hours to fix it, or otherwise remedy the situation. [KSNV]
⚖️ Lombardo Ethics Ruling
The Nevada Commission on Ethics decided yesterday to ding Gov. Joe Lombardo $20,000 for using his badge and uniform in campaign materials during his successful run for the office last year. That amount is about 1.25% of the hefty fine the commission’s executive director wanted to impose. Two of the body’s seven members voted against the censure — both appointed by Lombardo this month. [Nevada Independent]
📈 Lombardo Poll
Speaking of Lombardo, not only is he the most popular governor currently serving in Nevada, he’s the 20th most popular governor in the nation, according to a new poll. About 57% of the Nevada voters sampled approve of the job he’s doing. That number does not include the Progressive Leadership Alliance of Nevada, however. [Review-Journal, KLAS]
👏 Well, That Changes Everything!
“I prefer to describe (Symphony Park’s) evolution as a transformative revitalization rather than gentrification.” — Developer Patrick Brennan, talking about a 32-story residential tower his company has planned for Symphony Park. [Review-Journal]

A Couple More Things
🚧 Las Vegas is full of urban myths — haunted middle schools, stolen kidneys — though most are too outlandish to believe. But reader Serena G. proposes a Las Vegas myth that makes perfect sense:
“The mob owns road construction companies; that’s why roads are constantly under construction. They lost the casinos so had to find another way to make money. Plus hide a few bodies under cement!”

😬 So, a presumably well-meaning anti-violence activist comes to Las Vegas, notes that the healing garden built after the Route 91 shooting is 20 minutes away from the massacre site, and dumbly concludes we’re trying to put the tragedy out of our minds: “The victims should never be forgotten and the city wants them to be,” he tweeted. “What happened here should be front and center for all to see.” He clearly didn’t bother to research the actual memorial process already underway.

Can You Imagine Vegas Without Tipping?
Lately, it seems like we’re being asked to tip in more places at higher percentages. And according to some research, tipping isn’t great for workers, either. Today on the podcast, co-host Dayvid Figler talks with writer and longtime Vegas service worker Brittany Bronson about the surprising realities of gratuities — and whether we should do away with the practice.
Lastly today, if you’re looking for a job and a chance to do some good, check out this nonprofit hiring fair on Saturday. 👔 See you tomorrow!
