What's up with our weather?

August 2, 2023

Happy Thursday, Las Vegas! Lead producer Sonja Cho Swanson here, filling in for Scott Dickensheets. Insider tip: You can get a head start on your weekend and enjoy free entrance to all National Parks tomorrow, August 4th — here’s a list of ours.

What's CITY Talking About?

☔🔥 Weather Gone Wild

Nature is having a field day in Southern Nevada. Debris from flooding earlier this week shut down the Red Rock Canyon scenic drive yesterday. Meanwhile, the York Fire has reached the outermost edges of Clark County, including our newest national monument, Avi Kwa Ame. An official says the recent rains will help some, but that dry fuels can still feed the fires. The area is under a flash flood warning. (Review-Journal)

🍄 NV Scales Back on Shrooms

A landmark bill on psychedelics from this year’s legislative session has lost some of its teeth. While the original version passed decriminalized the use of psilocybin, the active ingredient in magic mushrooms, the final version signed by Gov. Lombardo only creates a working group to study the use of psychedelics and the impact of decriminalization. Nevada’s current penalties for possession remain in place: Up to 4 years in prison or $5,000 in fines. (Nevada Independent, IndyMatters)

🐟 Tinned for the Win

Tinned fish (yes, you heard that right) is the latest food trend to hit Las Vegas — but these aren’t your grandpa’s sardines. Today’s tinned a-fish-ionados are opting for sustainably-sourced mussels and mackerel packed with fresh herbs and local olive oil. Co-host Dayvid Figler chats with Kris Wilson and Erica Bell from the Tinned Fish Club to learn more. (🎧City Cast Las Vegas)

Today on City Cast

This year, the tinned fish trend has made it to Las Vegas through Kris Wilson, Erica Bell, and Emily Baddock, founders of the Tinned Fish Club. The organizers have been partnering with local restaurants and introducing the European mainstay to the Las Vegas food chain. Kris and Erica tell co-host Dayvid Figler why tinned fish is growing in popularity, how they convince skeptics to give it a try, and the latest chef on the Strip to join the club.

That’s all for today. Remember, just one foot of water can carry your car away during a flash flood, so when in doubt, turn around. Stay safe out there!
