💪 An ode to Nevada’s version of Rosie the Riveter

August 4, 2023

¡Buenos días, Vegas! It’s City Cast editor Adrian González back in your inbox for today. And shoutout to the Henderson Little League baseball team, who have a chance to qualify for the Little League World Series this weekend.

What's CITY Talking About?

🎲 Vegas Casinos Under Federal Scrutiny

According to an anonymous state employee, federal agents are investigating current and former MGM employees for allegedly skirting the law to pay off gambling debts. The scheme reportedly uses promo chips, which typically come with limitations but are being overridden by senior employees, as well as kickbacks from encouraging gamblers to participate in an illegal ring. 🏎️ A Public Safety Nightmare

Excitement is building for the Formula 1 face around Las Vegas this November, but that’s not the emotion Clark County Sheriff Kevin McMahill is feeling. “[It’s] a nightmare for me.” He points to the massive footprint of the event, which brings logistical challenges bigger than even the Super Bowl. Despite the words of impending doom, Sherif McMahill says his department is up to the task. [8 News Now]

🏠 Protections Expire, Evictions Spike

Eviction is becoming a grim reality for an increasing amount of Las Vegans. As federal and state protections against eviction run out, some Nevada courts have had to extend hours to make room for a growing number of cases. While organizations across the valley are working to provide assistance to residents, many worry that they won’t be able to keep up with demand. [Fox 5]

🍸 The Inclusive History of Vegas Speakeasies

It’s gonna be hot and sunny this weekend, so why not cool off in one of the Valley’s hidden gems? Here’s a history of how speakeasies shaped the city and the historic cocktails you can enjoy at one of the Valley's favorite speakeasies this weekend. [City Cast Las Vegas 🎧]
