What's CITY Talking About?
⚖️ Ruggs Sentenced
Former Raider Henry Ruggs has been sentenced to between three and 10 years in prison for the 2021 car crash in which a local woman, Tina Tintor, died in the wreck’s flames. The sentence still has to be approved by the judge. [Review-Journal]
🥫 License to Feed?
Some business owners near a licensed affordable housing complex called Hebron are opposing a new license for the facility that will allow it to also operate a food pantry in conjunction with Three Square. They fear a food pantry open to the public will draw more homeless people to an area on Las Vegas Boulevard that has seen fluctuating numbers of unhoused people for decades. Part of their concern: The apartment operator, Caridad, is also a homeless-services nonprofit, although it handles those services in a different location. Adding to the confusion, the City of Las Vegas is requiring the apartment complex, with paying residents, to get a "homeless shelter or mission" permit in order to continue their pantry, which also serves those residents. A hearing is set for October; the pantry remains closed. It had been operating there for a decade. [KVVU]
- Additional: An approach to homeless assistance no one’s talking about. [City Cast Las Vegas 🎧]
- Looking ahead: 🎧 Tune in Friday when the podcast team will dissect this issue in our weekly news roundup.
⚱️ Strange Accident
A local family is suing Davis Funeral Home after a deceased woman’s body was cremated by mistake. Her relatives wanted an open-casket service, and say an actual burial was religiously significant to them. [Review-Journal]
