🛏 Is it time to allow brothels in Vegas?

August 14, 2023

Happy Monday, Las Vegas! Here’s an odd and oddly enjoyable audio treat to start your week: The sounds of air traffic control at Harry Reid International — set to a chill musical backdrop. It’s my new work music.

What's CITY Talking About?

🪧🪧🪧 Board Flees Teacher Rage

Jesus Jara might’ve been named top school supe in Nevada, but the teachers who work for him aren’t showing him the love. Thousands of them packed the last School Board meeting, inside and out, to protest their lack of a contract and chant slogans (“CCSD is on fire! Jara is a liar!”). The board eventually adjourned without completing the meeting’s agenda. [KVVU, Review-Journal]

🪧🪧🪧 T-Mobile Workers Demand Contract

Also angry about the state of their contracts? Hospitality workers at T-Mobile Arena, who rallied by the thousands to protest stalled contract talks. They may strike if the impasse isn’t broken soon. [KLAS]

🛒 Homeless Numbers Climbing

Newly released data shows a pronounced rise in the number of homeless people in Clark County — 6,566, which is 16% higher than last year. The new numbers are based on an annual count conducted this year on Jan. 25 (and which likely doesn’t account for every unhoused person). This underscores what we all know: The problem is getting worse. [Nevada Current]

⚡ Fossil Bed Fiasco

A power line meant to connect renewable energy sources around the state would, in its currently proposed state, slice through a potentially fossil-rich corner of the Tule Springs Fossil Beds National Monument. The feds say it stems from a decades-old error — legally required power corridors weren’t included on planning maps. Rerouting the lines, we’re told could add $70 million to the cost. Opponents disagree. [Nevada Independent]

🛏 Oh, Brothels, Where Art Thou?

Much of the world assumes prostitution is legal in Las Vegas. Should it be? This city has long profited from being on the cutting edge of legalized sin. Why not bring sex work into the open? Co-host Dayvid Figler talks with UNLV sociology professor Barb Brents, a leading expert on sexual commerce. [City Cast Las Vegas 🎧]

First, Where Was It? ⤴️

Last week’s challenge: This slammin’ Sammy Davis Jr. mural holds court in the Arts Square building that also contains Vegas Theatre Company and Artifice. Kudos to these folks for getting it right:

This is one of those sights that looks like you should know exactly where it is — but it flits around your memory as you try to recall it. Do your best! Smash the button below to send me your answer, and be sure to put “Where Is it” in the subject line to make sure we get it!

Extra thanks to photographer Norma Jean Ortega for the terrific image! (Could you find a mild clue to this location on her Insta page? You tell me!)

Should Sin City Get Brothels?

Nevada’s the only state with legal prostitution — in brothels in a few rural counties. Why not here? Today, co-host Dayvid Figler chats with UNLV sociology professor Barb Brents, a leading expert on sexual commerce, talks about whether (and how) Clark County could get brothels, too.

OK, time to start Mondaying. Thanks for reading. See you tomorrow!
