August 29, 2023

Happy Tuesday. Hey, those of you with literarily inclined high-schoolers, let ’em know about the annual Spark! Youth Poetry Competition. They’ll get to read a few poems at the Las Vegas Book Festival — and there are cash prizes ($300-$100) for the top three finishers.

What's CITY Talking About?

🍎 Time for a Little ‘Nevada Way’?

Saturday’s deadline having passed — that was the date set by the county teacher’s union for the school district to offer a new contract — the union is now invoking a higher authority: Gov. Lombardo. The union wants him to intervene in the process, despite little consensus as to what he can do. Lombardo says he’s willing. [KVVU, Nevada Independent]

🛒 Cleanup in the Merger Aisle

Attorneys general in several other states are investigating the impacts of the proposed supermarket merger between Kroger and Albertsons. Potential issues: job loss, wage declines, less access to groceries. Nevada’s AG, Aaron Ford, is holding listening sessions to see what Nevadans think before he decides. [Nevada Current]

📈 Jobs Numbers

In every Nevada county, the unemployment rate is higher than the national average of 3.5%. Overall, the state’s 5.3% is worst in the nation. But there’s a “weird paradox” at work: Nevada also has among the highest rates of job creation. [Nevada Current]
