🚙 How Mount Charleston weather = Uber rage
September 1, 2023
Happy Friday. For many, your three-day weekend awaits — as does ours, so there’ll be no newsletter or podcast on Monday. But Tuesday? Comin’ at ya full-strength!
Well, almost full-strength. After today, our podcast co-host Vogue Robinson rolls on to new creative adventures (which you can follow, too). As sad as we are for ourselves, we’re happier for her. 👏

What's CITY Talking About?
🚙 Ride Rage
Rideshare drivers are protesting after what should have been a moneypalooza last weekend (thanks in part to Beyoncé) but wasn’t. The governor’s hurricane-related state of emergency was still in force — which prevented rideshare companies from imposing lucrative surge pricing. The emergency designation remains in order to assist with repairing Mount Charleston. [KTNV]

🌳 Hot Trees
Many of the valley’s trees are in jeopardy, officials say, thanks to climate conditions like July’s record-breaking high temps. Plenty of species planted here already have or will soon surpass their heat tolerance. It makes for a grim feedback loop: lost shade from dying trees exacerbates urban heat islands, which imperils more trees — and residents. [Nevada Current]

🍎 All You Need Is Gov?
Gov. Joe Lombardo has now officially waded into the vapor-locked dispute between the school district and its largest teachers union. He’s spoken with both sides this week, and while the substance of those conversations hasn’t been reported, it surely involves the words “the Nevada way.” Talks are said to be ongoing. 🐟 Koi Trouble
A couple in Henderson’s chi-chi Ascaya neighborhood (the one up on the hillside) is suing a local pool company for allegedly killing their valuable koi fish with pool chemicals — fish that the couple says could require six figures to replace. [Review-Journal]

Today on City Cast
Lions! Drivers! A Mayor! Oh, My!
If there’s news to be rounded up, our Friday podcast episode will do it. This week? We have fiscally ambiguous lions in Henderson, a brand-grabbing mayor in Oakland, and protesting ride-share drivers all over the valley. Co-hosts Dayvid Figler and Vogue Robinson are joined by TheList.Vegas publisher Andrew Kiraly.
That’s another week in the books, folks. See you around the next bend.
