⚖️ Ruling puts ‘dreamers’ on ‘borrowed time’
September 18, 2023
Good morning, Las Vegas. I’m happy to be here, bringing a bit of whatever this is into your day. If you think your family, friends, or fantasy-football adversaries might enjoy Hey Las Vegas, too, click here to forward to them. Go ahead, I’ll wait.
Thanks!

What's CITY Talking About?
⚖️ Dreamers in Danger
With a Texas judge reaffirming his earlier ruling that the DACA program (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) is illegal, what does that mean for the 11,000 Nevadans now benefiting from the measure that allows children brought illegally to America to remain? Law professor Michael Kagan, director of the UNLV Immigration Clinic, warns that recipients may be on “borrowed time.” [Nevada Independent]
📉 F1 Room Rates Sliding
Strip room rates for the weekend of F1 have plummeted almost 60% since they were first posted last year — but the two sources cited here are quick to assure us that it doesn’t mean interest in the race has dropped off. Though I suspect fewer arborists will be in the crowd than might’ve been the case before the Bellagio Tree Hack. [Review-Journal]
🤦 Ooh, Snap(shot)!
A picture snapped by a Review-Journal staffer at a teachers union meeting in July depicts a slide from a presentation that includes “Selective Sick Outs” on a list of “Rolling School Outs” strategies. The union has denied any role in those school-closing actions. [Review-Journal]
- Context: Journalist April Corbin Girnus talks about the possibilities of teachers union “work actions.” [City Cast Las Vegas 🎧]
📋 Abortion on 2024 Ballot?
Nevada’s relatively strong abortion protections are enshrined in law — but not in the state’s constitution. A pro-abortion group has filed a petition to begin the long process of changing that. If it qualifies for next year’s ballot, it would need voter approval then and in 2026. [KVVU]
- Context: Just after the Dobbs decision we spoke with City Cast teams in Salt Lake and Boise for a western perspective on its ramifications. [City Cast Las Vegas 🎧]

Where Is It?

First, Where Was It? ⤴️
Last week’s challenge: Big ups to the folks who properly identified this pointed feminist graphic commentary as adorning a wall in the New Orleans Square portion of Commercial Center:
🏆 Louise Ahrendt, Michelle Graves, Claire Wentzel
Thanks for responding!

Today on City Cast

Las Vegas Concert Etiquette
With Life is Beautiful almost upon us — to say nothing of the iHeart Radio and When We Were Young festivals — it’s time to review behavior tips and survival advice for Sin City concert-goers. Host Dayvid Figler and producer Layla Muhammad, both seasoned festival-attenders and live-music aficionados, drop their best dos and don’ts.
Lastly today, we’re sad to relay news about the death of Dr. Carol Harter, UNLV’s longest-serving presdient and (🎧) one of five Las Vegas women you should know. She will be missed.
☕ Scott Dickensheets
Thanks to Layla Muhammad for the groovy edits!
