⚖️ ‘Heinous act’ might see teen tried as adult

September 19, 2023

Let’s open today with a mea culpa: In yesterday’s edition, I credited a new petition effort to “pro-abortion advocates.” That was thoughtless phrasing on my part; “no one is pro-abortion,” a reader rightly chided me. I should’ve made clear that the group favors abortion rights. Apologies for the loose language.

What's CITY Talking About?

⚖️ ‘A Particularly Heinous Act’

Prosecutors intend to try as an adult the unnamed 17-year-old driver accused of deliberately running over, and killing, a 64-year-old bicyclist last month. The death of Andreas Probst was notoriously captured on video by a passenger in the car; a local criminologist calls it “a particularly heinous act.” [Review-Journal]

⛹🏾‍♀️ Aces High

Las Vegas Aces star A’ja Wilson scorched the Chicago Sky with a playoff career-high 38 points on Sunday, leading the defending champs into the second round of the WNBA playoffs. The team’s next game is Sunday. [KSNV]

👋 💸 MGM Losing Big

A gaming analyst says MGM International could be losing between $4.2 million and $8.4 million a day during the cyberattack. If accurate, that would be a sizable bite out of the $42 million cash flow the company is said to generate per day. [Review-Journal]

🚘 Deadly Roads — for Kids

Fourteen children died on Las Vegas roads in 2021. That rose to 20 in 2022. This year that grim figure is already 20, with more than three months yet to go. The youngest was a 6-month-old who died in March when a drunk driver ran a red light. [Review-Journal]

U.S. 95’s Funky Roadside Attractions

It’s been called a “dose of pure Nevadan oddity” — the stretch of U.S. 95 between Las Vegas and Tonopah. Overlapping influences of nuclear history, mining, wild artistic vision, natural mystery, and clowns have turned this route into a bizarro day trip — if you know where to look. And you will, once you listen to this podcast episode with travel influencer Terri Galura-Chiong. Dayvid Figler hosts.

Lastly today, Life is Beautiful starts Friday, and you know what that means: irritating downtown road closures! Here’s a schedule. See you tomorrow
