🪧 Hospitality workers OK citywide strike

September 27, 2023

☕ Happy Wednesday, fellow citizen of America’s 13th-best coffee city, according to this probably scientific-ish poll. Whether you observe National Coffee Day (Friday) or International Coffee Day (Sunday), we can help: We compiled our favorite coffee joints beyond downtown, and brewed up (🎧) a podcast episode on the subject, too.

What's CITY Talking About?

🪧 Hospitality Strike Authorized

Members of the culinary and bartenders unions voted to authorize a citywide strike if a new contract with the resort industry isn’t reached soon. Tuesday’s strike vote got 95% support. Negotiations continue next week, and union officials say any walkout would begin with MGM International, Caesars Entertainment, and Wynn Resorts, where contracts have already expired — this just before the busy holiday and F1 season. ⚖️👔💰 After the Hacks, the Suits

A half-dozen federal class-actions lawsuits have been filed against MGM International and Caesars Entertainment after hackers made off with terabytes of customer information. The suits allege negligence and breach of implied contract. [KVVU]

💨 Election Goodbyers

Among Western states, only Arizona has lost more top election officials than Nevada since 2020. Ten of our counties have new election bosses. Those 10 counties represent all but 4% of the state’s population. Combined years of experience lost in Nevada: 104. [Nevada Current]

🚌 New School

Last month’s rain damage on Mount Charleston was severe enough that the school up there won’t reopen this academic year. Students will continue attending class in Indian Springs. [Review-Journal]

Marc — These Words!

Comedian and podcaster Marc Maron loves the Wiseguys club in the Arts District: “It’s sort of a perfect room for standup,” he writes. “Low ceilings, wide. The sound of the audience reaction coming back at you is perfect. It’s really the only place I play in Vegas. I’m definitely not a Strip guy.”

Owning the LiB

The City Cast team was out in force at last weekend’s Life is Beautiful festival. A few lasting impressions:

Sonja Cho Swanson, lead producer: “One thing that sticks with me is the pure joy on the faces of Pure Sport, the local band that won the Rising Stars competition, and how a joyful tornado of a mosh pit formed in front of the stage.” (🎧 We talked about Pure Sport on the podcast recently, too.)

Dayvid Figler, host: “I got some sneaky bites from places like Momofuku and Half Bird, and was happy to see some fave locals on the festival grounds like Yukon Pizza, Grouchy John's, and Secret Creamery. Also on the local tip, hometown vendors at Market in the Alley brought their A-game! I bought new art!”

Layla Muhammad, producer: “A highlight for me was the Disco Queen stage at Fergusons Downtown, presented by Queen Las Vegas. They had drag performers, singers, and dancers. On Saturday we walked up on Ada Vox's drag show, and she brought down the house with her rendition of ‘Last Dance.’ They were partying hard in there!”

Not that you can’t see it from just about anywhere, but here are some of the best vantage points from which to see and take pictures of Sphere, as suggested by Las Vegas photographer and artist Mikayla Whitmore.

As it happens, this newsletter compiled its own list of best places to view the big round light ball. [Hey Las Vegas 📧]

My family just had a brush with COVID, so now that free COVID tests are back, I’ll probably order some. Plus, I like this adorable virus emoji —> 🦠 See you tomorrow.
