⏰ The high cost of teens sleeping in

October 3, 2023

Good morning! October means 🏳️‍🌈 Pride Month in Las Vegas, and it all kicks off with a parade on Friday and a big festival on Saturday. Details and events calendar here.

Now, on with our Tuesday 👇

What's CITY Talking About?

⏰ Time Is Money

Because studies indicate high schoolers would do better if classes didn’t start so early, the state education board wants Nevada schools to push back start times. Districts, ours included, are balking. They say the cost of new buses and drivers would be too high — a staggering $145 million under one scenario — and might result in less busing coverage. ☠️ Welcome to Arsenic Estates!

Today Henderson officials are set to consider a request by a developer to build 3,000 houses atop an abandoned mine. But a couple of local scientists who’ve studied the Three Kids Mine say more research is needed to ensure that the site’s cornucopia of mining-related toxins don’t pose a long-term threat. Don’t worry, developers; I’m sure Henderson has plenty of other toxic sites you can use! [Review-Journal]

🕳️ Influencers, Watch Your Step

Three hundred thousand — that, according to the linked article, is how many abandoned mines Nevada has (about 2.75 per square mile!). And, apparently, content-hunting YouTubers and vloggers need to be warned not to fall into them. (Or breathe fumes in them, or get caught in cave-ins, etc.) Only a small fraction of the mines have been fenced off. [Review-Journal]

What To Do

🎓 ‘A Chicana Punk in Higher Ed’ | Wednesday | 3 p.m.

Scholar Susana Sepulveda talks about her research into the Chicana experience within punk culture — and how her experiences as a Chicana punk shaped her academic career. [UNLV; free]

📚 Morgan Thomas Reading | Wednesday | 7 p.m.

The Black Mountain Institute fellow reads from the award-winning story collection “Manywhere.” [UNLV; free]

😱 ‘Haunted Las Vegas’ | Thursday | 7 p.m.

As part of the library district’s “Las Vegas Stories” series, author Janice Oberding talks about the valley’s most haunted places. [Clark County Library, University District; free]

😮 ‘Abandon’ | Thursday, Saturday-Sunday | 7 & 9 p.m.

This play delves into the (scandalous!) life and (shocking!) times of the notorious Marquis de Sade — not surprisingly, it comes with content and partial-nudity warnings, and is for the 17-and-over crowd. [Vegas Theatre Company, Arts District; $25-$80]

👻 Feelin’ Haunt, Haunt, Haunt

Autumn excursions, Nevada history, and the possibly paranormal meet in this episode about some of Nevada’s hauntiest haunted places near Vegas — the first of our three-part series on fall getaways. Tracie Barnthouse and Megg Mueller from Travel Nevada join host Dayvid Figler to craft a spine-tingling itinerary.

Lastly, today, a reminder: We’re told that tomorrow at 11:20 a.m., the feds will test the Emergency Alert System by sending that blaring alarm noise to your cell phones, TVs, radios, and any other device likely to be close to your ears. Brace yourselves!
