🪧 When is a strike not *quite* a strike?
October 11, 2023
Good morning! If you spend much time on X/Twitter, you might've noticed that squabbles over F1 have underlined an existential question about Las Vegas: Are tourism spectacles like this, and the headaches they entail, simply what this town does — its reason for being? Or is there a limit to how much residents should accept?

What's CITY Talking About?
🪧 … When It’s an ‘Informational Picket Line’
That’s what the Culinary Union is calling the mini-strikes it’s planning tomorrow morning and afternoon — two-hour actions in front of eight Strip casinos, which won't be work stoppages. [Review-Journal]
- Also: You know what else Strip workers would like compensation for? The added travel times during F1 race week, when getting to their jobs is likely to be a massive challenge. [KVVU]
⚖️ Teachers Take on Constitution
The teachers union filed a legal challenge to the 1969 provision in the Nevada Constitution that prohibits state workers from going on strike. Meanwhile, their contract dispute is now in arbitration, which means it will take approximately forever to resolve. [KTNV]
- Listen: Some background on teachers and striking. [City Cast Las Vegas 🎧]
🗳️ Trump Will Do Caucus
Former president Donald Trump has filed to participate in the GOP preliminary caucus, organized by the pro-Trump state party — not the preliminary election held by the state, come February. [KTNV]
❓ Mental Health Help
What appeared to be the very public unraveling of former Raiders defensive end Chandler Jones — who claimed on social media he’d been hospitalized against his will — puts a new spotlight on this aspect of mental health: What resources do Las Vegans have when someone they know is having a breakdown? Dr. Jim Jobin guests. [City Cast Las Vegas 🎧]

Las Vegas Chatter

🏀 Let’s hear it for the Aces!
Paul S.: “GO KNIGHTS GO” — the phrase that closed out Tuesday's newsletter — “is great, but, you know, the Las Vegas Aces are national champions and are playing in the finals right now. How about a call out to them with a GO ACES GO — seeing as they were the first professional team to bring a championship to Las Vegas.”
- (In our partial defense, we have noted Aces achievements, and look forward to celebrating their second consecutive title.)
😴 Regarding the prospect of later school start times, as called for by the state but which the Clark County School District is balking at:
Chelsea C.: “Anyone questioning the science, potential advantages to students, or how we would know if the change is 'working,' should read 'Why We Sleep' by Matthew Walker. In fact, every human should read this book. Sleep affects almost every aspect of our life, and most of us need to be reminded of or taught that.”
🚗 Regarding the practice of routinely knocking speeding tickets down to parking tickets to unclog traffic court:
Anon: “Well, they plea out drug dealers, murderers and other ‘significant’ criminal charges for a lesser charge or sentence. Why not speeding tickets? All are hazardous and dangerous to the community, so what’s the difference in criminal felony pleas versus speeding pleas?”
- Context: Listen to the episode of our podcast about this practice. [City Cast Las Vegas 🎧]

How Involuntary Commitment Works
The apparent public mental breakdown of former Las Vegas Raiders defensive end Chandler Jones — who claimed he’d been hospitalized and medicated against his will — brings up the question, how do you get someone involuntarily committed for mental health treatment in Nevada? What happens when you do? And how can you tell if they need help in the first place? Host Dayvid Figler gets some answers from Nevada psychotherapist Dr. Jim Jobin.
Lastly today, since people keep making the age of candidates an issue, here’s a fun map showing how old each state’s senators are. 👴 See you whippersnappers tomorrow.
