🗺️ You’re saying political maps are … political?
October 23, 2023
Hey, thanks for showing up on this fine Monday morning. Take note: This afternoon, beginning at 5 p.m., there’ll be a victory parade for the Las Vegas Aces on Las Vegas Boulevard, from Tropicana to T-Mobile Arena (map at link). Enjoy or avoid, as you wish.

What's CITY Talking About?
🗺️ Political Treasure Mapping
The old saying, “With great power comes great mapmaking flexibility” comes to mind as a nonpartisan national group recently gave very low marks to Nevada’s recently redrawn political maps. Drawn by the Dem-led Legislature in 2021 and in force for the rest of the decade, the maps give Democrats decided edges in three of the state’s four Congressional districts. [KSNV]

🔌 More CCSD Internet Woes
First hackers, now construction — it’s been a tough stretch for the school district’s IT folks. After the data breach that came to light early last week, the district suffered an internet outage — affecting online services, email, even transportation — following what Cox said was construction damage. 🧭 Let the Californication Jokes Fly
While gobs of Californians are still fleeing the Golden State to Nevada, the pace has slowed — 48,000 in 2022, down from 62,000 in 2021. (Now who’s gonna drive up our home prices?!) Picking up the slack: Arizona and Florida. [Review-Journal]
😐 Probably Means Nothing
Did you know that Nevada, one of the nation’s most seismically active states, experiences about 10 minor earthquakes a day? That’s what it says here! But late last week, that number shot up to 30 in one 24-hour period — one of the largest swarms in recent memory (and just in time for last week’s annual Great ShakeOut earthquake preparedness day!). Where Is It?

First, Where Was It? ⤴️
Last week’s challenge: Here’s another instance of everyone knowing the answer: Christ Church Episcopal, Maryland Parkway and St. Louis. It’s the site of an annual lobster fair, which took place Saturday. I don’t think I got a single wrong answer among the dozens of replies — far too many to list here. (Give yourself a 🏆 if you’re one of them.) Some of you shared memories of the place:
NV Birder: “Got married there in ’66, 57 years and counting.”
Liz Bash: “Christ Church is where my parents got married in the early ’60s, where my brother and I rendezvoused with other kids for the van ride up to Camp Galilee each summer, and where my brother tied the knot.”
Robyn Campbell-Ouchida: “My parents used to buy the lobsters there, and my sister and I were so afraid that they'd spill out and pinch us!”

Now for This Week’s Challenge ⤵️

It’s odd enough to see a payphone this deep into the 21st century — but in an elevator? That’s where reader Wayne Rorex found this one. And where is this elevator? Tell me, using the button below; be sure to put Where Is It in the subject line!
