🪓 No more Joshing — Raiders ax coach
November 1, 2023
Greetings, Novemberino! This is the first day of National Novel Writing Month, and let’s have a show of hands: Who’s writing a stinging comedy about a happy town that sells its soul to a European auto race? (Free title suggestion: “The Faust and the Furious.”) Good luck!

What's CITY Talking About?
🪓 Raiders End McDaniels' Residency
Following their Monday Night drubbing by the Detroit Lions, the Las Vegas Raiders have fired head coach Josh McDaniels — and general manager Dave Ziegler. This comes less than two years into their tenure in the Raiders locker room. Linebackers coach Antonio Pierce steps up as interim coach. [Las Vegas Sun]
🏠 Home Sales Sloooow
2023 may be the new 2008 — home sales in the valley are trending to be the lowest since that recession-ravaged year. However, different years, different causes: Instead of economic desperation, this year, it’s high interest rates that have hampered home sales. [Review-Journal]

🗂️ Student Data Leaked
Remember last month’s data hack at the school district? Now it appears that possibly damaging student information from that breach has been posted online — and one expert, father of a CCSD student, says there’s reason to be concerned. [KSNV]
🏎️ Race Holes
What would the local news cycle be without almost-daily gifts of F1 issues? Today it’s the film that race organizers have put over the glass walls of Strip pedestrian bridges to prevent unpaid views of the course — it also blocks views of the Strip and Sphere, and sightseeing vandals are ripping holes in it. Las Vegas Chatter

🤦 Oof!
Responding to our recent podcast episode about (🎧) how to talk like a Las Vegas local, Mason Voehl, executive director of the Amargosa Conservancy, offers a gentle correction:
“Yep, I'm going to be ‘that guy’ — it's pronounced Am-mar-gosa, not Arm-a-gosa. It's an instant tell for me as to who really knows the Amargosa region. Also implicated in your episode were landmarks in the Amargosa River including Beatty, and Yucca Mountain. (It's definitely Yuck-a, by the way.)”
🗑️ ‘A Serious Lack of Neighborhood Pride’
For an upcoming podcast episode, we solicited your opinions on the closing of a downtown Walgreens pharmacy. In this excerpt from one response, a resident notes that businesses near that store manage to keep their properties clean …
“Meanwhile, Walgreens always has a trash-laden parking lot and addicts on the pony wall, people passed out in the parking lot, and a bare minimum of landscaping. There's been a serious lack of any sort of neighborhood pride there for years. And as a result (it) has become a retailer I've avoided for years.”
🚧 Construction Updates?
Last week I bemoaned the lack of a public, real-time system for tracking road construction progress. Thanks, then, to a knowledgeable reader who pointed this out: a Regional Transportation Commission website that doesn’t quite do that, but does offer more info on the projects, including an interactive map of the valley’s roadwork. Now, dial back the promo vibe and add progress bars, and we’ll have something truly useful!
