⚖️ 8 teens arrested in beating death

November 15, 2023

Good morning! It’s Grand Prix eve-eve-eve — only three more griping days until the big event! I hope the racing bunny leaves something nice in your stocking. Now, on with the day’s business.

What's CITY Talking About?

⚖️ Teens Arrested for Peer’s Murder

Eight Rancho High students ages 13-17 have been arrested and face murder charges in the beating death of 17-year-old Jonathan Lewis. Police are still looking for two others. The altercation appears to have involved a pair of stolen headphones. For his part, Lewis’ father has said real justice would entail not only prison sentences for the culprits, but a community-wide conversation about teen violence and empathy. [KLAS]

🫴 Show Subs the Money

Substitute teachers who were supposed to get pay bumps for working in high-needs schools say they haven’t seen a dime — more than two months later. The hitch: the lack of a “payroll code” for those assignments. [Review-Journal]

  • Plus: They might’ve gotten their A’s petition handed to them in court, but credit the Schools Over Stadiums bunch for perseverance: They plan to sue the state, saying the stadium-funding bill doesn’t meet constitutional muster. [KTNV]

🚙 Speeding Ticket Practice Criticized

The National Transportation Safety Board chastised state and local officials after reviewing a 2022 auto crash in Las Vegas that killed nine. The driver at fault, who was going 103 mph, had been frequently ticketed but escaped accountability because most of his citations were knocked down to parking violations. [KVVU]

💰 F1: Worth the Investment?

With F1 ticket prices dropping at racecar speed, it’s worth asking if the manifold hassles with this event are just first-year startup necessities, or if they forecast bigger difficulties for the race’s future. On today’s podcast, co-host Dayvid Figler asks journalist Alan Snel, from LVSportBiz.com, whether the investment in this event will prove worth it. [City Cast Las Vegas 🎧]

Yes, this probably science-like study definitely makes Vegas sound gross. But this other study says Nevada is the state most likely to survive a real-life “Hunger Games” scenario. Which is good, right? So it’s basically a wash! (@MeltzVegas)

🐾 Volunteers at the Henderson animal shelter recently sounded alarms to the City Council about the condition of animals there. A followup:

Anonymous: “I’m a volunteer at the Henderson animal shelter, and … I wholeheartedly agree with the assertions made. It was so disheartening that the city and shelter decided to go the ‘be defensive and deny’ route rather than truly work to divert some of the vast pickleball funds to helping the animals, which are absolutely suffering.

“I hope the investigation continues until it’s remedied. It’s an outrage. The shelter employees are so understaffed but work heroically with little to save as many as they can.”

🗓️ This reader brings up a good question:

Colleen Kelly: “We are waiting (im)patiently for the restored Huntridge Theatre to open. Can you find out an approximate date for that?”

  • I asked the Dapper Companies for a resoration timeline, and they say they plan to file for the necessary permits early in 2024. "We should be ready to start construction in Q3 2024 with a grand reopening in mid 2025." Great news!

🚗 💸 About our state’s high car-insurance rates:

Tim Tieman: “I was with one company for a couple of years. After doing all the things they asked me to in regards to safe driving classes and allowing a driving habits tracker, they still bumped my insurance up about 26% last month. … It's ridiculous in a no-fault state that your rates go up based on other terrible drivers. Lawyers and judges who reduce fines and jail times for repeat offenders (especially DUI) should be the ones paying our ridiculously high insurance, not us.”

Are the F1 Headaches Worth It?

The Las Vegas Grand Prix is finally here, and the reception has been … lukewarm. Not only from locals tired of the endless construction, but also of a fanbase whose excitement was apparently overestimated. Are these just first-year growing pains or do they point to a troubled race weekend? Journalist Alan Snel from LVSportBiz.com unpacks the issues with podcast host Dayvid Figler.

Lastly today, if you want to see a video rendering of the 32-story condo proposed for Symphony Park, in which you’ll probably not be able to live, here it is. See you tomorrow.
