⚾ The A’s get to first base

November 17, 2023

Good morning! So, it seems there’s talk of Beyoncé doing a Sphere residency. Probably won’t amount to anything, even if the report is accurate — but it sure could sop up a lot of the venue’s red ink.

What's CITY Talking About?

⚾ Everyone Act Surprised!

Major League owners have unanimously approved the Oakland A’s request for a baseball residency in Las Vegas. It was the necessary first step in the process of demolishing the Tropicana and building a new stadium, projected to open in 2028. [Nevada Independent]

🚫 ‘Order Out’ Law OK’d

A new “order out” law goes into effect in downtown’s tourist corridor beginning Sunday. It will let judges prohibit anyone who’s been convicted of a misdemeanor within the corridor from returning to the area. Critics fear it will be overused against the homeless. Saying the City Council has gone “constitutionally overboard,” the ACLU has vowed to fight it. [Nevada Current]

✍️ Jara Letter Opposes Fed Cuts

Taking a break from generating calls for his dismissal, school district Superintendent Jesus Jara is asking Nevada’s congressional delegation to oppose deep cuts to education in the House appropriations bill. He says the lost funds will drive CCSD teachers from the profession and hurt the district’s English language learners. [KVVU]

✋ Baristas Balk

Baristas at three unionized local Starbucks walked off their jobs for a while yesterday as part of a nationwide “Red Cup Rebellion” at the coffee chain. Red Cup Day is when Starbucks hands out reusable cups. It’s a very busy day, and one of the workers’ grievances is that there aren’t enough of them to handle the workload. [Review-Journal]
