Is teen violence on the rise?
November 20, 2023
It’s Monday! I’m writing this on Friday, but I suppose it’s safe to assume F1 is over now. Some questions remain. Did it deliver the billion-dollar windfall the city was promised? (Do you feel the trickle down?) Has anyone said how much public money will help defray the cost of mucking up the Strip? And which museum gets the infamous manhole from the first practice run? We need answers!

What's CITY Talking About?
🎒 Rising Teen Violence
The arrest last week of eight teens for the brutal beating death of Rancho high schooler Jonathan Lewis Jr. is just the latest instance of violence in or near schools that has shaken the community. Today, podcast co-host Dayvid Figler and Nevada Current deputy editor April Corbin Girnus try to make some sense of these events — and wonder what schools can do. [City Cast Las Vegas 🎧]
⚖️ Grieving Parents Sue
The parents of a teen fatally run over by a speeding car in front of a Henderson school last year are suing not only the driver, but his passengers, the city of Henderson, and the school district. Rex Patchett’s parents say the passenger egged on the reckless driver, and that both the city and district should’ve already fixed the road bump that helped cause the incident. [Las Vegas Sun]

📍 All About the Map
One of the perks of controlling the statehouse is that every 10 years your party gets to draw the political maps — you can design voting districts that help keep your party in power. Not anymore, if a grassroots ballot initiative has its way. It would create a supposedly nonpartisan commission to handle mapping. [Review-Journal]
🔮 Round and Round
Hey, you’re thinking, I wonder what the fancy, out-of-town media thinks of Sphere? Wonder no more:
- Here’s the New Yorker’s take on Sphere, plus Michael Heizer’s “City” and immersive entertainment in general.
- And here’s The Atlantic, whose headline offers a glimpse into its slant on our colossal orb: “Sphere and Loathing in Las Vegas.”

Where Is It?

First, Where Was It? ⤴️
Last week’s challenge: If you’ve been to the iconic Huntridge Tavern or the newly opened — and by all accounts fabulous — Winnie & Ethel’s Diner, you recognized this tableaux as being in the Huntridge Shopping Center. These folks sure did:
🏆 Colleen Kelly, Kevin Raschko, Brian Weiss
Says one, Huntridge Tavern is “where I have been drowning my sorrows in whisky since I was 19, at the same wood bar installed in 1962.” Here’s hoping that this reader, and all of you, have fewer sorrows to drown these days!

Making Sense of Teen Violence
Ten youths are either in custody or being sought for the grisly beating death of a 17-year-old schoolmate. It’s just the latest incident of violence in or near a school. Nevada Current deputy editor April Corbin Girnus joins co-host Dayvid Figler to probe the question, Are kids becoming more violent?
