⚕️ Do hospitals dump patients at shelters?

December 1, 2023

Good morning, and happy Friday. December has arrived, and with it the usual festive features of the season: excited children, bad parking, “Merry Christmas” vs “Happy holidays,” and, of course, endlessly self-renewing arguments about whether “Die Hard” is a Christmas movie. Let’s get to it!

🐡 Provide Your Own ‘Phish Bowl’ Jokes

In welcome jam-band news, Phish has signed up for four days at Sphere in mid-April. A ticket-request portal is open now through Dec. 11; tickets go on sale to the general public on Dec. 15. Word is the band will create different immersive graphics for each show. [KTNV]

🏥 Questionable Discharges?

Perhaps because actual consequences are rare, it’s more common than it should be for local hospitals to drop off fragile, discharged patients at local homeless shelters without alerting family — even, in some cases, when the patient isn’t homeless. Only two rather minor fines have been levied against hospitals in the last five years, according to this investigation. [Review-Journal]

🚨 State Troopers Killed

Two Nevada state troopers were killed on I-15 near Charleston early yesterday morning — as they assisted a roadside motorist, they were hit by another driver. That (alleged) driver fled, but was later captured. [Las Vegas Sun]

🥟 Chinatown Redevelopment

As Chinatown continues to rise as a culinary and cultural scene, its areas of blight are becoming more of a concern. Some 77 acres within the neighborhood’s two square miles have been identified by Clark County as “blighted.” Chinatown is one of several areas being considered for “redevelopment” status, which would make more cleanup resources available. ❓ Do You Recognize This Man?

The image above is a “facial approximation image” based on the remains of the body famously found in a barrel in Lake Mead in May 2022. He died of a gunshot wound and may have been in the lake since the 1980s. This image is the FBI’s latest bid to identify him. [Review-Journal]

Do Brits Fear the Sphere? Plus, Adelson’s Hoop Dreams, and Holding a Candle to Vegas

Time for this week’s Friday News Roundup, and co-host Dayvid Figler and executive producer Sonja Cho Swanson are joined by a voice from the past — former co-host Vogue Robinson! (The crowd goes wild!) They’ll talk about a couple of big issues (Miriam Adelson buying an NBA team; London’s will-they-won't-they of a Vegas-style Sphere) and a fun small one: What a Las Vegas-themed candle would smell like. (Your thoughts on that will appear in Wednesday’s newsletter.)

Lastly today, a fun fact from this week’s official inspection of the Burning Man site in Northern Nevada, notoriously plagued by wretched weather this year. What standard did the event have to meet in order to pass? Less than a square foot of leftover debris per acre. It was a squeaker, but Burning Man passed.

See you next week!
