Nevadans debate the meaning of 'genocide'

December 11, 2023

Monday is here, and so are we. So let’s get right to it.

What's CITY Talking About?

🎓 UNLV to Finish Year Remotely

After the tragic events of last week, UNLV will largely operate remotely for the rest of 2023. There will be no required finals; the grade students had earned by Dec. 6 will be their final grade — though some professors might decide to offer optional online or take-home finals. Winter commencement, scheduled for Dec. 19 and 20, will go on. [KVVU]

💬 When a Word Matters

Many Nevadans who follow the events in Israel and Gaza are debating the meaning of the term “genocide” after the Governor’s Advisory Council on Education Relating to the Holocaust put out a statement arguing against using the word to describe Israel’s actions — prompting a backlash. 🏈 Funny Bets

The game last month in which UNLV’s football team routed New Mexico 56-14 is being looked at with suspicious eyes after a wagering monitor flagged suspicious betting activity. No one will confirm if an investigation is officially underway. [Review-Journal]

🎸 Like a Boss

OK, it’s not the most important story on the docket today, but it is the hardest rocking one: After years of not coming to town, Bruce Springsteen will perform in Las Vegas on March 22. Tickets go on sale Thursday. [KLAS]

🕳️ Boring in Chinatown

Elon Musk's Boring Co. has bought an acre-and-a-half in Chinatown with an eye toward building a station for its Vegas Loop project there — one of an eye-popping, possibly credulity-straining 93 stations proposed over its 68-mile length. No timeline for construction yet. [Review-Journal]

First, Where Was It? ⤴️

Last week’s contest: I can see why a couple of Vegas-smart readers guessed that these guys are in the Mob Museum — they definitely exude an omerta vibe. But this see-nothing, hear-nothing, say-nothing trio greets patrons at the legendary Piero’s Italian Cuisine, where many hush-hush deals have surely been made.

Congrats to these folks for getting it right:
