🏨 Did a new hotel open or something?
December 14, 2023
Hey, Las Vegas. In case you need another occasion to mark, this week is the 25th anniversary of the 775 area code, which split Reno and the cow counties off from Vegas' 702 — an early harbinger of the state’s pronounced urban-rural split.

What's CITY Talking About?

🥳 Big Blue Opens at Loooong Last
It took nearly two decades and $3.7 billion, but the Fontainebleau opened very late last night in a blaze of lights, hype, glamor, and decorative Kardashians. A(ish)-listers on hand included Justin Timberlake, Cher, Stallone, and Tom Brady. Among its superlatives, the hotel is now the tallest building (though not structure) in Nevada. [KLAS]
⛺ Victim Fears Gunman’s Return
One of the men wounded in the Dec. 1 shooting at a Charleston Boulevard homeless encampment — who now has a titanium rod in a bullet-shattered femur — can’t afford pain meds or antibiotics, but says the worst thing is not knowing if the gunman will come back. One person died and four were hospitalized. The culprit remains at large. [KSNV]

⚖️ CCSD Sued
A former teacher at Garside Junior High is suing the Clark County School District, saying she was retaliated against for reporting overzealous, invasive strip searches of students there. No comment from CCSD. [Review-Journal]
👋 Will the Loop Be Empty?
A couple million Teslas are being recalled to fix concerns with the company’s Autopilot program. Hopefully this means the valley’s roads will be at least temporarily free of entitled, swerving drivers. [KLAS]

Let’s Talk About Dates
No, not the kind you swipe right on. We’re talking about edible dates from palm trees — their curious history, how an Indigenous couple saved a valuable date strain from extinction, and where you can forage for them around here. Co-host Dayvid Figler talks to our other co-host, Sarah Lohman, a culinary historian.

See you tomorrow!
