🫁 🦠 Looking for TB in schools

December 18, 2023

Good morning, and welcome to Monday. Are you tired of the holidays already? Just done with ’em? Well, Henderson has your back: It’ll open its Christmas tree recycling program tomorrow, six whole days before Christmas. That’s Hendo — always proactive on the important issues!

What's CITY Talking About?

🫁 TB Determined

Not for the first time in recent months, the health district is investigating a school-based tuberculosis exposure, this time on multiple Clark County School District campuses. A person with active TB visited several schools, whose faculty, students, and parents are being alerted. [Review-Journal]

A Candid Conversation

Noting that the UNLV shooting involved a white perpetrator killing three professors of color, and wounding another professor, the school’s Asian & Asian American Studies Program is urging us to have a complicated, necessary conversation. Even if the investigation ultimately doesn’t classify the shooting as a hate crime in legal terms, they ask, “How do we explain why the factual outcome is that four of the victims are faculty of color?” [Nevada Current]

🎤 Yeezy Come, Yeezy Go

OK, mostly I’m including this story about cops breaking up a Kanye West-headlined warehouse rave in Las Vegas so I could uncork that headline. [KSNV]

🛒 Doesn’t Feel That Way, Through

According to this Consumer Affairs report looking at the climbing costs of groceries around the county, Nevada saw just a 4.2% rise year over year — among the lowest in the nation. [Consumer Affairs]

Where Is It?

Where Was It? ⤴️

Last week’s challenge: As players on the nearby bocce court know, this fly guy decorates a wall adjacent to Azzurra Cucina Italiana, on Henderson’s fast-growing Water Street. There were some really good near-miss guesses — City Center (known for its art collection), Park on Fremont, Springs Preserve. And when Phyllis Palmer guessed “private residence's poolside mural,” she was actually right in a way she couldn’t know: My wife liked this mural so much we hired the same artist to mural up our backyard with a strikingly similar hummingbird. We don’t have a pool, however.

Speedy hummingbird applause for these correct answerers:

🏆 Wayne Rorex, Karen Sangster

And additional huzzahs to reader and Henderson institution Paul Szydelko for submitting the photo.

✨ Note: No fresh Where Is It photo this week (next Monday is a holiday), but it’ll be back in a few weeks. Meanwhile, use the button below to email a photo of yours; we might use it in this space in 2024!

You’re New Here! Let’s Get You Started

At the beginning of the year, it was estimated that 60,000 people would move to Las Vegas in 2023 — and while we’re still waiting on the official numbers, we know that 5,000 people moved to Vegas just from L.A. in August. So if you’re a newbie, you’re not alone. Today, we bring back an episode from January, in which co-host Dayvid Figler and executive producer Sonja Cho Swanson invite Vegas newbie Kristine Johnson to ask her burning Vegas questions: about cars, the heat, and making friends.

➕ What the heck, let’s put together a Vegas newbie starter kit, with podcast episodes about …

Lastly today, the new “Queer Eye” lifestyle-makeover team is coming to Las Vegas, in case you or someone you know needs an upgrade.
