🗳️ Will Las Vegas Muslims abandon Biden?

December 20, 2023

Good morning. As we all look ahead to next year, our podcast team is creating a 2024 bingo card — and you can help. We’ve already gotten some great reader suggestions, like “Elon Musk moves to Nevada” and “AI takes control of the Sphere.” More, please! Be sure to put “Bingo” in the subject line.

What's CITY Talking About?

🛣️ 11 Can’t Wait

The stretch of U.S. 95 between Henderson and Kyle Canyon Road — which, confusingly, also does business as U.S. 93 and I-515 — will soon get another name: I-11. It’s part of the long-running effort to link Las Vegas and Phoenix with a highway, and eventually Mexico and Canada. The new name will, of course, require an umpteenth round of invasive roadway upgrades. But at least the I-515 designation will be retired. [Review-Journal]

🗳️ Biden Losing Muslim Support

Some Las Vegas Muslims are calling for others to abandon President Biden over his handling of the Israel-Hamas war. His “neglect to champion peace and the protection of life has led to unspeakable suffering amongst innocent Palestinians,” says one. [Review-Journal]

📈 Power Up!

I’d tuck a lump of coal into NV Energy’s holiday stocking — in response to its upcoming rate hike — but they’d just burn it and thank me for the free fuel. Starting in January, average power bills will go up about $6 a month. At least our gas bills aren’t increas … oh, wait. [KVVU]

🚀 Getting a Boost

Only one Nevada high school has a JROTC program devoted to the Space Force: Durango. The program leader says it’s more about teaching science, engineering, and leadership than military recruitment. [Nevada Independent]

The Other Two Must Be Doozies!

A recent mention of Mystic Falls in the newsletter prompted this response from a great chronicler of punk rock:

“Singing ‘I’m proud to be an American’ during the laser light show at Mystic Falls with dozens of drunk punks is one of my top three Vegas memories.” (Author Jim Ruland)

🏆 Tupac Memorial?

This reader noticed that Google Maps lists a “Tupac Memorial” near the site where the hip-hop star was murdered:

“I've never stopped to see this but have noticed it on the map before. I assumed there was a placard. Have I been wrong all this time? Now I'm gonna have to go there and see.” (Debra C.)

Note: It appears to be a utility pole graffitied with fan messages, not an official plaque or marker.

We Have a Winner

My deplorable tendency for punny headlines meets with the approval of at least one reader:

"‘Yeezy Come, Yeezy Go’... Best pun of 2023, just under the wire!” (Evelyn)
