⚖️ School district hit with antisemitism complaint
December 22, 2023
Happy Friday! Quick holiday-related note: This newsletter and the City Cast podcast are both taking next week off. But we’ll still be around: For podcast listeners we’re reposting some of the year’s best episodes, and newsletter subscribers will get a couple of abbreviated — but still cool — editions next Tuesday and Thursday. We’ll all be back in the game come Jan. 2. See you then, and have a great rest of the year!

What's CITY Talking About?
⚖️ CCSD Hit With Civil Rights Complaint
A legal group has filed a complaint against the school district on antisemitism grounds. It stems from an April incident in which a swastika was allegedly cut onto the back of a Jewish special-needs student at Clark High School — an attack the Lawfare Project says the district did not adequately investigate. 📃 Nevada Also Has Trump Ballot Suit
After the Colorado Supreme Court bumped Donald Trump from the state’s 2024 ballot, eyes now turn to other states where lawsuits have challenged Trump’s candidacy — which includes Nevada. The suits say Trump’s role in the Jan. 6 storming of the Capitol disqualifies him on 14th Amendment “no insurrectionist” grounds. [Las Vegas Sun]
🛂 Will Shooting Lead to Visas?
According to the school’s Immigration Clinic, some noncitizen students of UNLV — undocumented or international students — might qualify for a special visa under a 20-year-old law that protects noncitizens who are victims of or witnesses to a crime. It’s a slow process: Some 80 applicants from the Oct. 1, 2017, mass shooting still await a decision. [Nevada Independent]
🎉 NYE Details
Is it too early to mention New Year’s Eve? No? Good. Some deets: Fontainebleau will join eight other casinos in the yearly pyro hoo-ha on the Strip, to be watched by an I’m-sure-very-credible-estimate of 356,000 revelers. Third Eye Blind will perform downtown. [Review-Journal]

Today on City Cast

Looking Back at 2023
Today’s episode is the year’s final Friday news roundup — a full-team hoedown of slants on 2023’s most overlooked news stories (the implosion of the Transfix art project; legislative conflicts of interest) and fond remembrances of our best meals of the year. Spoiler: Someone who’s not me picked Roberto’s.
Lastly today, a personal note: I’m retiring in mid-February. Let's save the goopy farewell for next year — I bring it up now because we need to hire my successor. If you look at this newsletter and think, Hey, any idiot can do this, you might be just the person we’re looking for! Check out the job posting. See you in ’24!
