🗳️ Trump can stay on Nevada ballot
January 10, 2024
Happy 🐫 day, Las Vegas. Below we’ve got some news, silliness, and a clip of that famous monorail song from “The Simpsons.” Carry on!

What's CITY Talking About?
🗳️ Judge: Trump Can Stay on Nevada Ballot
Saying the Texas man who sued to keep Donald Trump off of the state ballot didn’t have standing to do so, a judge has dismissed the action. The judge says John Anthony Castro pretended to run for president solely to file this and similar suits, which cite the Jan. 6 uprising as the reason to exclude the former president. ⚖️ Insurrectionist Update
In the three years since the Jan. 6 insurrection, seven people with ties to Nevada are among the 1,200 nationwide charged for their roles in the event, most prominently Oath Keepers founder Stewart Rhodes. Here’s where their cases stand. [Las Vegas Sun]
💸 Taxing Situation
Ready for some good news? Four states have more regressive tax structures than Nevada! We’re all the way down in fifth place when it comes to taxing the poor at rates more than four times higher than the rich. Yay? [Nevada Current]
🎞️ No. 6 Will Blow Your Mind!
Here’s a list of the 10 highest-grossing movies set in Las Vegas, and, yes, the word “Blart” sadly appears. “The Hangover’s” No. 1 spot won’t surprise you; a few other entries might. [Review-Journal]

🚄 Our Monorail Dreams
The Las Vegas Monorail is, at best, a side-eyed ’90s relic for convention-goers, at worst, a symbol of our crushed public transit dreams. Co-host Sarah Lohman talks with writer and monorail enthusiast Eric Duran-Valle about the system’s surprising Disney connection, its issues, and how to get $2 locals tickets. [City Cast Las Vegas 🎧]

😲 67 Years Ago Today
According to an entertainment column in an ancient Review-Journal, the stage show by Harold B. Minsky set to open on Jan. 10, 1957, would be “especially risqué, so much so as to shock this otherwise blasé town.”
I can see it on the sign: Welcome to Otherwise Blasé Las Vegas!

Responses to recent items about (🎧) political ads and Trump appearing in the Epstein documents …
✉️ “Last election season, I couldn’t take another political ad while watching YouTube, so I bit the bullet and paid for YouTube premium, which has no ads. My BP instantly dropped, and I became far less livid. Best money I’ve ever spent.” (GB)
✉️ “Trump derangement syndrome is rampant because the subjects have been told the narrative and can't be bothered to look for themselves! You didn't 'look' (except the same captured sources) yet you followed the pack and spewed the lie! … We American Patriots have been waiting years (we are told) for ALL of you to wake up!” (Kevin H.)

Waiting on a Train
If “The Simpsons” has taught us anything, it’s that (begin piano music) “There’s nothing on Earth like a genuine, bonafide, electrified, six-car monorail.” And if, much like Springfield’s, our monorail began as a boondoggle, local author Eric Duran-Valle nonetheless is a monorail appreciator. On today's podcast, he tells co-host Sarah Lohman why that is.
