💣 Someone’s calling in bomb threats to hospitals

January 12, 2024

Good morning. Hey, we’re taking Monday off for Martin Luther King Jr. Day; we’ll be back Tuesday with a fresh newsletter and podcast. This year marks the 60th anniversary of King’s April 1964 visit to Las Vegas, when he urged a crowd to “learn to live together as brothers or we will perish together as fools.” Not a bad sentiment for the year ahead.

What's CITY Talking About?

🗳️ Election Protection

Encouraging more lawyers to volunteer as poll workers — that's just one of the tactics state officials are employing to secure Nevada’s elections in what’s sure to be a haywire year. [Review-Journal]

😑 His Ebullient Personality Is Perfect for Vegas!

“Would Bill Belichick be a good fit for the Raiders,” this story asks. Certainly, his presence would be a boon to the city’s sleeveless-sweatshirt enthusiasts. [Las Vegas Sun]

🪧 Teachers Seek Ability to Strike

An old state law makes it illegal for public employees, including teachers, to go on strike. The teachers union, fresh from its protracted contract battle against the school district, says it will launch an initiative to overhaul that law. More than 100,000 signatures will be needed by November. [Nevada Independent]

💣 Scary Development

It appears Nevada schools, government buildings, and especially hospitals have been receiving a rash of bomb threats lately. The most recent was Tuesday. [KTNV]

Formula 1 Anger, Humongous Ads, Henderson’s Fiesta Challenge

It’s time for a Friday news roundup, and our podcast team has fresh spurs and lassos. Topics: Lingering outrage, especially among small businesses, about F1; are those Godzilla-size ads on Luxor and Sphere too tacky even for Vegas; and what should go on the old Fiesta casino site in Henderson — wrong answers only! Host Sarah Lohman is joined by co-host Dayvid Figler and TheList.Vegas founder Andrew Kiraly.

According to the online survey mill WalletHub, Nevada is the nation’s 44th best state in which to raise a family. That’s sixth from the bottom! I think the message is clear: We need more convention centers our children can actually sneak into!

See you on Monday.
