🤖 Cool stuff from CES!
January 16, 2024
Hey, Las Vegas! In today’s edition we have something for everyone — assuming everyone is interested in bats, magic, and futuristic technology. Let’s get to it.

What's CITY Talking About?
🚄 High Speed Train Moving Quickly?
You might be skeptical about the Brightline train set to run between here and not-quite-Los Angeles — but the Department of Labor isn’t. It met last week with local and California unions to begin planning the hiring of 11,000 workers. Start time: Summer. [KVVU]

CCSD and CCEA negotiated safe haven and scrubbing provisions for abusers at the expense of student safety.
🎒Lawsuit Alleges Failure to Protect
Parents of a local student are suing the school district and the teachers union, alleging that both entities failed to protect their daughter from a sexually predatory teacher. Why the union? The lawsuit says the union and district negotiated agreements that would allow questionable teachers to change schools. [Review-Journal]
🧏 ACLU: Deaf Inmates Mistreated
The ACLU is suing Metro for failing to adequately accommodate deaf inmates of the Clark County Detention Center. It says its deaf client had little access to interpretive technology or jail staffers fluent in sign language. [KTNV]
🦚 Lonely Peacocks in Peril?
The gorgeous and magnificent peacocks of Floyd Lamb Park face an uncertain future — they’re all dudes, lacking wild females to mate with. (Apparently domestic lady peafowl don’t work.) The city is trying to devise a plan. [KLAS]
- We here at Hey Las Vegas love the peacocks. [Hey Las Vegas 📧]

Go, Go, Gadgets!
As you might’ve heard, or noticed from the traffic clogged around the Convention Center, the Consumer Electronics Show was just in town. The granddaddy of Las Vegas trade shows annually introduces boss new tech to the world. Most of us aren’t allowed in, but producer Layla Muhammad spent a day there inspecting the gadgets, and joins co-host Sarah Lohman to talk about what innovations we might soon see around the valley.
