📱 Teachers union sues over alleged Jara tweet
January 17, 2024
Good morning. In case you missed it, here’s our podcast co-host Dayvid Figler on the teevee bringing a skeptical, humanistic take to the whole jumping-at-the-judge saga. Give it a look — after you finish this newsletter, of course.

What's CITY Talking About?
⚖️ Trick or Tweet?
The teachers union has filed an unusual lawsuit against the school district — an open-records action meant to get to the bottom of a “vile” post on X, allegedly by Superintendent Jesus Jara (though possibly a hack?), which made a saucy accusation about the union’s president. [KSNV]

🤐 Learning Their Place
The four new nonvoting members of the school board haven’t been in their chairs for a full month, and already the rest of the board appears ready to marginalize them. New rules to be considered next week would prevent the nonvoters from making a motion or asking for reconsideration of a previous action. The policy is opposed by local municipalities and some legislators. [Review-Journal]
🏫 UNLV Returns to Campus
Yesterday, UNLV students and staff officially returned to the school for the first time since the Dec. 6 shooting. In the interim, administrators have replaced hundreds of doors damaged during the evacuation and hired more security. But some wonder why no panic buttons or improved alarm systems were installed. 🏗️ Big Builds Update
As we lurch into the new year, here’s a brisk status check, good or bad, of some noteworthy Strip and downtown building projects — including an … Atari hotel? Beep boop. [Review-Journal]

Should businesses (🎧) hurt by Formula 1 be reimbursed?
“Absolutely. Furthermore, a thorough investigation needs to take place about exactly who in government gave the OK to use public rights-of-way for a commercial enterprise. That person or persons cannot be trusted to manage Clark County property and needs to be fired. … This needs to be investigated and fleshed out in a courtroom.” (Cathy R.)
We recently aired a podcast episode about the (🎧) much maligned/misunderstood Las Vegas Monorail:
“I am a Las Vegas resident, and the best way to travel from one end of the Strip to the other and hide from the heat or cold and rest your body is on the MONORAIL.” (Anon)
🏨 A Little Las Vegas
If you had an infinite number of monkeys running an infinite number of 3-D printers, they might come up with a bonkers re-creation of the Las Vegas Strip. Luckily, this person did it already. Cool video. (Hat tip to @KerryBilicki/X)
Out of Context
I have decided to chase my dream, but with a think-outside-the-box approach in order to stand out from other applicants.

Let’s Get This Fossil Party Started!
As someone whose ancestors were either mammoths or giant sloths — the Ancestry.com results are inconclusive — I’m naturally quite interested in the Ice Age Fossils State Park, Nevada’s newest state park, which opens Saturday. Podcast co-host Dayvid Figler talks with Park Supervisor Garrett Fehner and takes listeners back to a time when mammoths, giant sloths, and large sea creatures called this place home — and why it matters now.
In case you just quick-skimmed the events listings above, let me single out one item of keen interest to arts and culture lovers — tonight’s 5:30 p.m. discussion about affordable live/work housing for downtown artists. It’s the sort of idea that might someday help (🎧) keep the arts in the Arts District.
See you tomorrow!
