💰 A’s donate big to local politicians

January 19, 2024

Howdy, reader! Relative to the news item below about traffic safety, recently crunched numbers say Nevada is just the 44th best state in which to drive. Yikes! And the misery gets worse if we’re driving to the grocery store: Nevadans on the average pay $295 a week on groceries — second highest in the nation.

What's CITY Talking About?

🤑 A’s Spread the Wealth

The Oakland A’s handed out $112,000 in campaign contributions during the team’s 2023 push for stadium funding. Forty-six Nevada politicos got those tasty A’s bucks, with several county commissioners and Dem legislators topping out at $10,000 apiece. [KTNV]

🗳️ Why Isn’t Trump on Primary Ballot?

For those Nevada Republicans still flustered to learn that Donald Trump isn’t on the state’s GOP primary ballots they’re getting in the mail, here’s a clear and full explanation. [KTNV]

📸 Sheriff: I Feel the Need for Speed Cams

Right now, cameras that fine speeders and red-light runners are prohibited by state law. But as traffic fatalities rise — “We’re already two ahead of what we were last year at the same time,” says Sheriff Kevin McMahill — he wants to see that law changed. [Review-Journal]

  • On the other hand, McMahill might feel less upbeat about some cameras — like the one that captured a Metro officer apparently harassing a local man. [KTNV]

🚰 The Spigot Is On

According to numbers crunched by the daily paper, about 47% of those employed by the Southern Nevada Water District and the Las Vegas Water Authority earn six figures. 👀 Not all are desk jockeys, either — the list apparently includes custodians, painters, and security guards. (Good for them!) [Review-Journal]

A’s Donations, Bitter Tweet Lawsuit, Ongoing Resolutions

Time for our weekly news roundup, and, boy howdy, is there news to round up, whether it’s the Oakland A’s dishing out tall dollars to local lawmakers (and is that so wrong?), a lawsuit over a gross tweet alleged to be from CCSD boss Jesus Jara, and hey, what New Year’s resolutions do we hope the city hasn’t given up on yet? Featuring executive producer Sonja Cho Swanson, co-host Dayvid Figer, and Nevada Current journalist Michael Lyle.

Thanks for hanging out this week. Have a terrific weekend, and I’ll be back Monday with a new Where Is It challenge.
