🎞️ School district releases disputed video
January 22, 2024
Happy Monday, yo. The state Department of Transpo has designated five roadways in these parts as “scenic byways.” Pretty standard stuff: Red Rock, Valley of Fire, Mount Charleston, Hoover Dam, the Strip. For me, a sleeper fave is Northshore Road between here and Overton. It skirts Valley of Fire but has miles of stunning geology all its own.

What's CITY Talking About?
📹 Cop-Student Video Released
After almost a year of stonewalling, the Clark County School District has complied with a judicial order and released bodycam footage of last year’s notorious incident in which a district police officer threw a student to the ground, then kneeled on his back. An ACLU spokesman said the video “highlights the bald-faced lies” the district has allegedly told about the encounter. [Las Vegas Sun]
🏡 Foster Families Needed
Possibly startling fact: “The county has not had a net gain in foster homes in at least the last five years.” There are 340 licensed foster caregivers in the county right now, but hundreds more are needed — so the county is offering expedited training classes through September. [Nevada Current]

🎨 Can We Price Artists Into the Arts District?
In order to help the Arts District live up to its name, the city of Las Vegas has begun exploring ways to create affordable housing for artists in a neighborhood they’re rapidly being priced out of. It’s engaged an arts-focused real-estate company to parse the possible solutions, though one thing already seems clear: “It’s going to have to be new-build,” says a spokeswoman. [KVVU]
