🏡 Is this a good time to buy a house?

January 24, 2024

Good morning, sports fans. Have you heard of the Las Vegas Thrill? No? It’s our new professional women’s volleyball team, ramping up now toward its first home game on Feb. 15. Read all about it.

What's CITY Talking About?

🚘 Rideshare Unrest

Frustration among local rideshare drivers is ratcheting up — over lower pay, higher fees from Uber and Lyft, and a lack of transparency from those companies. “I got a 42-minute ride and I made $11 dollars,” says one. [KLAS]

💸 Another Fine Mess

A local homeowner is blaming his rental tenant after being fined a whopping $180,000 for illegal short-term-rental activities. After a warning by the city to stop, the house continued to rent out for a year, generating neighborhood complaints. The owner says the tenant is responsible. [KVVU]

📱 Jara’s Socials Studied

In response to a lawsuit filed by the teachers union, the school district has agreed to provide records regarding Superintendent Jesus Jara’s social media accounts. The crux of the issue: a post on X, allegedly by Jara or an underling, that contained a disparaging remark about the union’s president, Marie Neisess. [Review-Journal]

🏘️ Should I Stay or Should I Go?

Given the topsy-turvy state of Las Vegas’ housing market, it's hard to know if this is the right time for a move. On today’s podcast, professor Nicholas Irwin, who teaches real estate and economics at UNLV, explains what to look out for in this housing market — and whether now is the right time to buy. 🚽 Hot Potties

Following last week’s list of our favorite public bathrooms, you told us about a few of yours:

🚰 “I like the bathrooms at Cantina Tequila in The District. They each pay homage/enshrine a celebrity — in the women’s it's Pedro Pascal and the men’s is Charo. It’s complete with music and celebrity soundbites, motion-sensor audio responses, flashing strobe lights, and more. You can’t help but laugh when you’re doing your business and washing your hands!” (Gina Yager)

🚹 “Don't forget the Golden Tiki men's room, with the piped-in bodily function sounds, and a woman's commentary while you are standing at the urinal. … Red Dwarf has a nice collection of video cameras mounted to the ceiling of their men’s room.” (Robert Verginia)

🧻 “The bathroom at the Erotic Heritage Museum. I haven't been for a couple of years, but my Wisconsin sister was thrilled to see her graffiti still on the wall in there the last time we visited. And she STILL wouldn't (tell) me what she wrote. My imagination ran wild. Sis!” (Heather H.)

⏩ Quick Notes

👉 Regarding the class-action Verizon settlement we wrote about last week, reader Katie G. was the first among several to note that some customers have already received emails containing the links necessary to get your money. Be sure to check your spam folder!

👉 Reader John D. suggests an alternative to Dropicana, the lame nickname given to the construction at I-15 and Tropicana: “Tropayoucanta.” Hire this man, NDOT.

Is Now a Good Time to Buy a House in Las Vegas?

Nicholas B. Irwin, of UNLV’s Lied Center for Real Estate, visits the podcast to talk about the forces currently shaping the local homebuying market. Is this a good time to buy? A better time to sell? Dayvid Figler hosts.

Lastly today, the economy must be in decent shape if it’s keeping so many dorky survey-makers employed — I mean, someone actually got paid to compile a list of 2024’s “snowiest counties” (Clark is No. 149 of 256, by the way). And then some other dork gets paid to send it to you in a newsletter! What a time to be alive, amiright?
