💥 Do you live near a dangerous intersection?

January 29, 2024

Good morning, reader. Just a heads up, early voting for the primaries is now underway. 🗳️ Check the sample ballot you probably got in the mail, or click here for more details.

What's CITY Talking About?

💥 Crashiest Intersections

Metro has compiled a list of the valley’s 20 most dangerous intersections. They include Desert Inn and Nellis, Hualapai and Town Center, and Russell and Eastern, where one business owner complains that the frequent accidents are curtailing his business. [Metro, KVVU]

🪧 The Bus to Striketown

By an overwhelming margin, RTC bus drivers and mechanics have authorized a strike if they can’t reach a contract agreement with the private contractor that operates the system. Just in time for the Super Bowl! The drivers want higher pay and increased safety amid a rash of violent incidents on buses. [KLAS]

🔇 School Board Hits the Mute Button

Because the School Board has gotta School Board, it has adopted a controversial policy that prevents appointed board members from making motions or reconsidering previous actions. The new policy was opposed by lawmakers, governments, the Chamber of Commerce — so of course they passed it 5-2 without allowing discussion. [Review-Journal]

🥃🚗 DUIs Through Time

An allegedly drunken driver found in a burned car after crashing into a wall at the M Resort last week was already awaiting court action on a DUI charge from August — which happened some 20 years after he was the driver in a juvenile DUI accident that left three other teens dead. Because he was charged as a minor then, that deadly 2003 incident won’t influence his penalties now. [Review-Journal]

Where Is It?

This one certainly stumped me when I first saw it, and raised my eyebrows when I learned its location. Is it …

  1. In a back corner of the Caesars Palace lot, a companion to the better-known Buddha statue on the property?
  2. In a side courtyard of an office park that housed the old Zappo’s headquarters in Green Valley?
  3. In an old Fremont Street motel currently undergoing conversion to shops and restaurants?
  4. In a mostly hidden courtyard behind a famous bar on Spring Mountain Road?

Scroll to the bottom for the correct answer.

An Insider’s Guide to Wee-Hours Vegas

The question as to whether Las Vegas (🎧) remains a 24-hour town is a moot one to certain groups of people — entertainers chief among them. What do these folks do once they knock off at night? Sure, some go home. But for others, says entertainment industry veteran Jacob Smith, the fun continues. He downloads his nightlife pertinents to co-host Dayvid Figler.

Lastly today, the answer to this week’s Where Is It puzzle is 4.

“After a couple of cozy drinks and an excellent pizza at the Sand Dollar on Spring Mountain last month,” says our executive producer, Sonja Cho Swanson, “my husband and I wandered into the courtyard behind the bar. Electronic music bumped from a tent nearby, and serenely poised in the midst of it all, a Buddha statue sat in repose, a slight smile on his face. Now that is some meditative power.”
