📅 Tropicana closing date set

January 30, 2024

Greetin’s, reader. Time for a little wisdom-of-the-crowd action: With Valentine’s Day coming up, and reservations needing to be made, what’s a nice, romantic restaurant that’s not on the Strip? Something that will make my wife flutter her eyebrows and say, “Man, your readers were right about this place.”

What's CITY Talking About?

📅 Stopicana Date Set

April 2 is National Ferret Day — and, perhaps unrelated, it’s also the day the Tropicana will shutter for good as it begins its slow, not-at-all-controversial transition into the proposed site for the A’s alleged stadium. [KLAS]

🏈 Swift Travels!

American Airlines is having fun with the Super Bowl romance between Taylor Swift and Chiefs player Travis Kelce. Several flights from Kansas City to Las Vegas on Feb. 9 and 10 have 1989 (a Swift album title) as their flight numbers; several return flights are numbered 87 (Kelce’s jersey number). 🌶️ Judging the Judge

The ethics complaint against District Court Judge Erika Ballou is a spicy tale of hot-tub photos, profane and defiant social-media posts that heavily quote Cardi B., and strictures against eroding judicial confidence. [KLAS]

⛰️ Yippee Ki-Yay, Mother Nature!

What kind of person would diss nature? The people who post one-star reviews of the Southwest’s landscape, that’s who — like the person unimpressed with “the bland canyon.” [City Cast Las Vegas 🎧]

Nature Smature!

Nature? Overrated. At least according to those Yelpers who’ve posted scalding one-star reviews of notable natural features. Listen in as the podcast’s executive producer, Sonja Cho Swanson, challenges co-hosts Sarah Lohman and Dayvid Figler to guess just which bit of nature is being slagged by over-the-top bad reviews.

Lastly today, the five most popular dog breeds in Nevada reportedly are, in order: Chihuahua, French bulldog, German shepherd, shih tzu, Yorkshire terrier. This is, of course, backward. The winsome shih tzu, like the one snoring a few feet from my desk, is clearly the best dog. I won’t be taking any more questions at this time.
