👋 Jara submits his resignation

February 1, 2024

Happy Thursday! So it’s not like local roads need another issue, but have you noticed how many cars don’t have license plates? You see that everywhere. What gives? One big reason, the DMV says, is that some regulations around car registration were loosened during the COVID shutdown — and lots of us haven’t returned to form.

What's CITY Talking About?

❓ Jesus Jara Files His Walking Papers

Embattled CCSD Superintendent Jesus Jara has submitted a conditional resignation, which the School Board will discuss next Wednesday. The “conditional” part: that his severance package includes a year’s salary. (According to Transparent Nevada, he makes more than $325,000 a year, not counting bennies.) If approved, his last day would be Feb. 21. This would end his tumultuous five-year tenure leading the nation’s fifth-largest school district, a period that’s seen fights with the teachers union, the COVID shutdown, his firing and rehiring, and calls for his ouster from several state politicians. • Also on the Feb. 7 board agenda: possibly appointing deputy superintendent Brenda Larsen-Mitchell to replace Jara. Permanently or on an interim basis? We’ll see.

📱 AG Goes After Social Media

Nevada Attorney General Aaron Ford is suing most of social media — TikTok, Snapchat, Instagram, Facebook, and Messenger — saying the platforms’ algorithms prey on teens’ vulnerabilities and encourage addictive behavior. [Nevada Independent]

⚖️ Fake Electors Dispute Charges

The six Nevada Republicans being charged as fake electors are asking for the case to be dismissed. On what grounds? That they shouldn’t have been charged in Clark County; that they believed what they were doing was legally legit; and that they didn’t intend to deceive anyone — the ersatz documents they produced allegedly didn’t mimic the real thing. The Fancy Food Trends Coming to Town

The Fancy Food Show was just in Las Vegas, and our own Sarah Lohman, podcast co-host and noted food historian (check out her books!), was on hand for some serious trendspotting. What big food trends are coming to Las Vegas, and what were the craziest concoctions she saw?

Lastly today, with the Terrible's hotel-casino in Jean now torn down, what happened to the two iconic, 12-foot statues of gold-panning miners that adorned the site? Not to worry. They’ve been adopted by the tiny desert hamlet of Goodsprings. ⛏️
