🏪 Why you should embrace strip malls

February 2, 2024

Happy Groundhog Day … though we’re a bit miffed that this list of “alternative groundhogs” — animals around the country besides Punxawhatever Phil that also predict the weather — did not include our own Mojave Max. (Feel free to send an email urging them to fix this grievous omission!) Meanwhile, try to make this a great day in case you get stuck in a time loop and have to relive it over and over. I might spend the day at The Writer’s Block, but you do you.

What's CITY Talking About?

🛑 Unsafe Walking

Of the 30 people who died in car crashes last month, half were pedestrians — only two of whom were in crosswalks when they were hit, and one of them was crossing against a Do Not Walk signal. Part of the problem, according to Metro, is pedestrian “complacency.” [Review-Journal]

🌨️ The Snow Won’t Save Us

Remember how last winter’s snowpack replenished a little bit of Lake Mead and a lot of our hopes that the drought was waning? Eh, not so much this winter. Across Western and Southern Nevada, and in other areas critical to the Colorado River, this year’s snow is considerably lighter so far — at record lows in some spots. [Nevada Independent]

🏨 Players by the Lake

To minimize the bright distractions and overpriced nacho plates offered by the Strip, the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers will stay in Lake Las Vegas before the Super Bowl. Tell Celine we said hi! Be sure to pet the nice coyotes! [KVVU]

⚖️ Bill Cosby Sued

Due to a new state law eliminating the statute of limitations on sexual assaults, a woman is suing Bill Cosby in a Las Vegas court over an assault that she says happened in 1986, in the Elvis Presley Suite of the old Las Vegas Hilton — when she was 17. [KLAS]

Jara Resigns! A Viral Video! Where Have All the License Plates Gone? And Did We Mention Jara Resigns!

All of that 👆 and the wit and charm of guests April Corbin Girnus of the Nevada Current and Vogue Robinson (welcome back, beloved former City Cast host!) — not to mention executive producer Sonja Cho Swanson in the host chair.

Lastly today, the downtown Marriage License Bureau is looking for an artist to paint a mural on its building, one that will “capture the fun and glamor of Las Vegas weddings.” So if you can paint Dennis Rodman and Carmen Electra getting hitched, you have until Feb. 29 to apply!

Once again, Sonja Cho Swanson supplied the groovy edits!
